OLN TDF coverage is better to watch during the day because...

...Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen do the entire play-by-play. The evening "extended coverage" version is Trout Wig and Bob Roll, whom I like as a studio a commentator but he stutters alot during live action and is not nearly as fluid and eloquent as Master Phil.

Here's the trick: Tape the day times airings for Phil and Paul and tape the last 30 minutes with the Trout and Bobke for the addtional interviews during extended coverage. $0.02. :)

Agreed.

Cranks 07-24-05 05:22 PM

Having watched both on some days, it's amazing how much Phil and Paul bring to it - history of the area (St. Etienne for bicycles), castles, riders and their issues, they can id a rider by his pedaling style. So much of the evening time is either dead, discussions of how Lance compares to Jordan, or little "magazine" type excerpts (food, etc.) The other night he continued to ask Chris Carmichael questions while a breakaway was taking off - what's that? Who's in it? How far ahead are they now? Do you think this one's going to go? No, instead it's all about carbo-loading yadda yadda. Nothing everybody here doesn't already know, but I had to get it off my chest. And now I won't have to think about it for the next 11 months. Waaaaa!!!!

amen!!!

Agreed. I don't even like watching the pre-game show. I just fast forward to the start of the race and sit back and listen to the prose of Phil and Paul.

The pre-race show seemed to be for the first-time viewer - i.e., nothing you don't already know, if you've been following the tour, is discussed.

We always recorded the live show in the morning, and sometimes would watch the evening highlights for the extra interviews at the end (they seemed to run out of time for that with the live broadcast).

Agreed. It was great coming home in the evening and watching my recording of the live broadcast from the morning and fast-forwarding through all of the commercials. Its funny that they called the evening broadcasts "extended coverage" while often the morning live broadcasts of the race shown were actually longer than the nightly "extended coverage"

Phil and Paul are THE voices of pro cycling. Out on my group ride Sunday morning, I kept hearing the voices of Phil and Paul in my head narrating our ride. (Especially when I was "in a spot of bother" ;-) I like Bobke, but in small doses. And you have to give Troutwig some credit, he is pretty sharp and made some funny comments. He's come a long way as MC of the broadcast since he started a few years ago. And Kirsten Gumm, OMG, what a babe!

i think it's funny when trout wig and bob are commentating and trout will make a comment or ask a question thats so stupid that bob just never responds.
2 examples:
trout wig: i was in a resturant last nite and a couple from arizona came in and asked, "who one the days stage(was a flat stage)" i said it doesnt matter it didn't effect Lance.

trout wig: when i got home after the tour last year i went to the bike shop down the street so i could check out the street version of the bike Lance rides. the guy at the store said,"o we have better bikes than that." Al says," dude do you know how stupid and arrogant you sound?"
like there can't be a better bike than what Lance rides, or people don't have different opinions on whats a good bike, or maybe a shop that doesn't sell trek wouldn't naturally say what they do sell is better.
he'd say somethin like that and dead air would follow. i kept hopin to hear bob call him an idiot. :)

At least I live in Austin. Maybe I can keep that residual high a little longer since we will probably have another celebration, and can look forward to seeing Lance show up at the Tuesday nighters again. Maybe he'll even take on a greater bike advocacy stance now. And hey, we have this forum to keep the Lance's victories alive!

boy this is the kind of thing that would have been SO useful to learn a few days ago!

Phil adn Paul are SO much better than Al and Bob in doing the play by play. I do think that Al is good behind the desk as the "moderator" and he does come across as an earnest, yet somehwat unknowledgeable fan. Bob needs to take acting lessons or something because his speaking cadence combined with those ridiculous hand gestures is a bit over the top. I do enjoy his wacky humor but honestly these guys are so B O R I N G compared to Paul and Phil.

Yeah, it took me a year or two to pick up on that nuance of the broadcasts myself. And to sincity cycler, the Tues. nighter is our regular ride (race) that takes place on some (what used to be) country roads (now being consumed by sprawl) every Tues night during daylight savings time. Saw Lance and Ekimov out there earlier this year a few days before Eki's crash (on some other Farm road west of Austin).
