Best Location For Roadside Camping In 2008 Tour?

Best Location For Roadside Camping In 2008 Tour?
Hi everyone,
This year my wife and I, and our 19' camper, will be in France for the tour. We have the flexibility to attend any of the stages we choose to, but our plan is to attend only one stage though. I am hoping to get some advise from those more knowledgeable about where the best location may be for our adventure.
We want to be in the mountains; will be able to arrive at the location 2 or 3 days in advance to get a really good spot; will not be biking at all, but will be hiking around while we wait (close-by castles, or the like, would be nice to hike to); want the location to be as beautiful and picturesque as possible to facilitate some excellent photographs (we are photographers); and would like to experience some of the crazy crowds that are part of the tour, but don't necessarily need to place ourselves, and our camper, in the middle of several hundred thousand drunk people, unless you think we need to!
I see that the Alpe d Huez may be one of our better options, but I wonder if there may be a more beautiful mountain stage I am not aware of. Any help would be greatly appreciated and will be gladly rewarded with a nice glass of French wine on race day!

Advice on seeing mountain stage
Like Erick,
we wil be attending the tour for the first time and was looking at the Alpe d'Huez stage. Probably looking at somewhere around the col de Galibier. Do we need to arrive 1-2 days in advance, as we will be in a camper as well. Do we need to park the camper far from where we will watch the stage, or will it be close by. Any info on weather conditions, and any other info that may be useful will be greatly appreciated. We are both from Melbourne in Australia, and looking forward to seeing one of the most spectacular stages of the tour.
