Verizon/CNN/ESPN: Thanks for nothing....

Spent the day driving mother-dearest from my house where she's been recovering (from hip-replacement surgery, of all things) down to her place on Hilton Head. Long road trip from one end of South Carolina to the other...

By arrangement, I was gonna call the LBS for regular Tour updates from the car. Tried several times. No signal twice, then straight to the LBS's owners mobile voicemail the third time.... <insert cursing>

As we're finally getting to HHI, I find ESPN Radio on AM. It's about 11:00 am? Between commercials, every conceivable sports story (and non-story, for that matter) gets yakked about. Lots of detail about the upcoming college football season. Even high school football prospects. And will Barry Bonds play today? Will Felipe Alou restore harmony to the San Francisco Giants clubhouse? Which clubs will Tiger use that day?

Tour? What Tour? Not a peep..

<insert much cursing>

When we get to Mummy's house (no internet, no OLN), I start flipping between CNN, Headline News, ESPN, ESPN2, etc. hoping to see or hear something. Nope. Not even a mention on the tickers scrolling across the bottom of the screen.... <insert much more cursing>

Point: Somebody owes me......

That's because ESPN personnel buy their bikes at Wal Mart.

I feel for you not having OLN, but for those of us who get OLN, a switch to ESPN would by horrible, they would condense it to 30-60 minutes like CBS did when they had the rights to the final stage with LA. YOur dear old mother owes you

I think you'd regret ever saying that if ESPN actually did start to cover the TdF. I'm guessing 1 hour of evening coverage and several pre-emptions. That, and they'd probably lose viewers and thus ad revenue. I'm very happy with OLN, what other outlet would replay 4 times a day?

Well, you could go to eurosport.com and get your information there... they still have written and audio commentary.

Get Sprint PCS (former Verizon employee here ).
I still cannot imagine why poker is getting so much airtime, and now they have the World Series Of Darts. I am not going to make fun of thses "sports" but I would think they could do more with cycling than darts.
Of course every pub crawler and barfly probably wants to kill me for saying that .

Cheers,

Brian

Oh, god, you want the Giro and the Vuelta too? I need to go back to having a life - checking out for 3 weeks every year is too much as it is.

I remember seeing some Vuelta coverage a couple of years ago. The riders were going through a mountain pass where there were still walls of snow at the sides of the road. I suppose it would be OK on the ascent, but you could get frostbite on the descent.

That's why I record the tour on my homegrown PVR. I can stream it to my smartphone from the road (don't watch while driving though)
