Rider's Food

With Floyd bonking yesterday this seems like a good subject.

What do the riders eat during the race?

Gels, power bars, little ham or turkey and cheese sandwiches, some jelly and butter sandwiches as well, Also baked potatos, eaten like an apple believe it or not. Candy Bars sometimes too.

So all you freds can start carrying a baked potato in your jersey pocket now.

oh yeah, i did forget that bit. I wonder if its still the old school stuff you can get some places around the globe., with actual cane sugar instead of HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) stuff sold in the US.

Good question. I had the sugar cane version in Mexico last month while on my honeymoon. Dang that was good, though maybe being thirsty after being on the beach and in the ocean for a few hours may have had something to do with it. Oh, and it's even better mixed with a bit of rum too.

Cuda: I'd imagine in Tejas you could find a little Mexican grocery that carries Mexican Coke (La Cosa Verdad).

I was reading somewhere that they have sandwiches with ham, cream cheese, and jam on croissant. That actually sounds really, really good.

Everybody knows you put the potato down your pants, not in a jersey pocket.

Sheesh.

Allan Peiper gave a rolling interview in 1992 (with cameo appearance from Dmitri Konychev) eating a sardine roll....the wind at 45kmh was blowing chunks of it out of his mouth....

you can get honest to god Dr Pepper in Waco
made with Cane sugar not HFCS.
Don't know if I'd want to chug a bunch o that on
a long ride unless I wanted to do a Greg Lemond at Paris Roubaix
immitation (ewww).

I've used a potato before for really long rides (also when I happened to have a leftover baked potato in the fridge ) - works great!

Phil had a spread laid out on their breakfast a couple years ago. It was full of rolls, pastries, danishes, cereal, oatmeal, fruits, coffee, tea... for a single rider! They eat around 5000-7000 calories a DAY!

In the 2005 TDF the Disco boys had what looked like delicious rice tarts stashed in the van. I've been looking for a recipe ever since.

Evidently a little beer is part of the diet also. Not during the race, of course. From Velownews...

"It was an attack that stemmed from a quiet beer Landis shared with team manager John Lelangue on Wednesday night, when the pair resolved that the Tour was "not over."

We all know what Lance's beer of choice is. Wonder what Landis' choice brew is.

you can safely add another 1000-1500 to that for a rider during a 3 week tour...
