I thought that he was only about 176 pounds. Let me do a little research and get more info.

EDIT: From what I have found he is only 176 pounds which puts him at about the same weight as Armstrong in latter years. I don't think he is large enough for climbing to be a factor if he is fit enough. How good of a climber he is will soon be known.

Check out the tour de suisse coverage at cyclingnews.com. Expect him to lose about 10 minutes per climbing day. You might be able to shave some of that given the yellow jersey effect. But I don't think he can be a contender into Paris.

Andreas Kloden is about 140 and is like a pikes peak celica. Cancellara is 176 and like a semi truck.

It has nothing to do with his weight and everything to do with his specialty, his skills, what he's been training for, and he has not been training for mountains.

As messed up as this is, I'm siding with RyanF.

No way did Armstrong weigh in at 176 during the tour. That's deep into Der Jan territory.

And a bit to do with his teams options. If they had no real GC contender they might be willing to put a lot of effort into keeping him in Yellow. In htat case it would not surprise me if he managed to keep through the first mountians and see flat land again in Yellow. After all Mig and Jacques were not exactly mountian goats. But him keeping it to Paris would be a huge long shot, one the team will not take with better options.

But even if he trained for the mountains he had no chance. Robbie McEwen is small like a climber but can't climb. Fabian is a Time Trialist but is also a huge dude. The last huge guy to win the tour was Ullrich but he was special. Cancellara will be hanging in the groupetto.

i think he started some tours (or at least early season races) in the low 170's, but ended in the low 160's. I've heard that armstrong (and other GC men) plan on loosing a few pounds during the first week before the mountains. They dont go in fat per se (except for jan) but they plan on loosing a least a couple kilos throught the race. i mean, how could anyone even digest enough food to NOT loose weight during the tour?

EDIT just found a site that siad 165#, but again that doesnt state at what point in the season...

Nothing to do with his weight? Weight is a huge factor. 10 pounds is the differnce between a tour winner and a cat 5 loser.

so your saying, someone like say... lance, gained 10 pounds he would instantly drop down to cat5 and not even be able to keep up with them ? hah, he could gain 20 pounds and still remain in the pro peloton
