Barloworld

So this wildcard team is kicking butt.. 2 stage wins and pretty close today. What do you guys think is in the future for this team? Will they stay together or split up and join more high profile teams? Will sponsors flock to them and hook em up? I'm curious what is going to happen to this team?

If they can keep their talent pool together, I see no reason why they shouldn't capture more sponsorship and become a contender. They've been trying to get an invite to the tour, and are showing this year's was well deserved!

Don’t forget that Barloworld’s Hunter is second in the Green Jersey competition and Soler is second in KOM. Amazing for a team new to the TdF. Astana is also doing well for a wildcard team that was resurrected out of the wreckage of Liberty.

On tomorrow’s time trial, Soler is the second most interesting rider to watch, after the Chicken. He seems to be a rising star – how much of one is the question.

Well,

the first thing is that Barloworld is going to have to increase its budget from the $4.7 million to at least the 8 - 9 million minimum Pro-Tour teams run with (I think Confidis is something like 13 million, unreal).

Secondly - they will HAVE to re-sign Soler and Hunter plus sign a few better riders for the Grant Tours. Hunter and Soler have essentially done all their work alone. Notice there is no Barloworld train for Hunter in these sprints. There is a reason.

Third - this bodes well for them. I think this off-season is going to be a free-for all as Sponsors leave, new teams form, and riders are all scrambling to find a sponsor. So if Barloworld plays its cards right, they can acquire some additional talent.

Hunter is no stranger to Pro Tour teams. He rode for Landis last year. I'm sure he could join a number of teams next year if he wanted to.

The DS of this team is Claudio Corti. If you follow the sport closely, you'll remember him as the DS for Saeco, and then for one year Lampre Caffita.

Guys like Super Mario, Lombardi, Simoni, and Cunego rode for him. He was the winning DS for a ton of stage wins and of course, a couple of Giro's.

It's been a good team for a while, just too small in the past for this big stage. One of the first riders they signed was Astarloa a couple of years ago, who has since moved on.

It's no mistake that they are doing well.

Cannondale got on board when Corti took over as they had a relationship going back to back the Saeco days.

The team is registered in South Africa.

Well,

somehow I bet the $$$ was more to sign with Milram. But I am sure he wishes he was back in the Tour.

Google is your friend...

"Barloworld is an industrial brand management company that achieves durability in business through long-term value creation."

Essentially,

Barloworld is a large conglomerate which faciliates the sale of brands (such as Caterpillar in the developing world) as well as the sale/production of other brands. So they distribute Caterpillar (hence the yellow bands on their jerseys for the tour), BMW throughout Africa etc. Essentially, they are a giant dealership with the added ability for large scale marketing and a reach into hard to enter developing market.

I agree that their description is a bit Corporate Speak, but they use it for a reason. It makes them sound more sophisticated than if they said: We are a large equipment dealer.

*sigh* Fine... check out this Barloworld page if you want to see what the company is really about (from their view). It even describes which industries Barloworld is involved in.

Be nice to see Debeers sponsor them since their a S.A. team. I could see the jerseys now with
a cool looking diamond, highlights of gold in it.

You are assuming that I didn't A) google first and B) also checkout barloworld's own homepage, which is your mistake. If you checked out their own page, it is as lucid as the quote you gave above. And yes VT Biker's post was helpful, unlike yours.

looks like barloword's future is secure...they'll for sure in next year's tour. I'm glad Soler won...when was the last colombian stage win? It must have been Botero. And the first s- african win. good for robbie hunter too- i've always liked him and rooted for him!

This is where you may be wrong. If Soler and Hunter both go to a different Pro Tour team, Barloworld may not get invited back.

However - Barloworld is clamoring to be invited to the Pro Tour, and after Unibet's recent court rulings, it seems as if a spot is going to open up in the Pro Tour.

If this happens or if Barloworld at least obtained an unoffical invite sooner rather than later, they can then pump more money into the team, sign Soler and Hunter and start to look at signing a TT specialist.

They are for the most part except for Hunter (30) and the other Columbian climber (34) quite young. Andy Hapsten says that for the most part, age 32 is the age when almost all riders decline significantly in terms of recovery. If that is the case, Hunter really has 1 more good tour in him. But with this youth comes a team that is not the best in terms of supporting the leaders. So Hunter especially is out there alone whenever a sprint occurs. Imagine his performance if there was a Barloworld train like there is the Quickstep train.

Yeah, I was initally excited, thinking they had something to do with Piedmontese wine. So I was disappointed to find on their webisite a bunch of MBA BS about branding and value creation.....

I love the crazy Columbian kid. I hope they stick together. They are fun to watch. I am sure that Cannondale will pump some $$$ into the team. I think they have lost some notariety and need some good PR.

They are pumping money into the team. In fact, two teams.
