versus heart rates

Why is it that every time the riders' heart rates dropped to around 115-120 either Phil or Paul would say something like "They're just about at a training ride now."

Is this how people trained in the 80's?

No, that's how the pros train on their 8-9 hour training rides.

What's your heart rate on hour 7?

Shoot. Mine would be lower than that because I would be in bed sleeping after 5 hours.

uhh, 115-120

but I'm not a professional. It depends on maxHR, but many touring cyclists could easily ride 9 hours at that heart rate.

It is not about the heartrate it is about how much power they can make at that heartrate.

of course a pro can put out many more watts than me at any given heart rate. however, for each individual cyclist, 115bpm represents a certain amount of effort (more or less, taking into consideration all the environmental effects on HR), and I would think that for most Professionals it's too low for anything except recovery rides. apparently not, though.

These are the same guys who said Contador lost Evan's wheel at the finish yesterday because he wasn't paying attention. They have a lot of air time to fill and aren't always fact checking before speaking.
