VanDevelde....

Top 5 possible?

Cant actually watch the TDF since my stooopid cable company charges extra for Verses as part of sports package which is heavy into nascar and rodeo

rankin116 07-11-08 12:32 PM

Cycling fans dot com. They usually have live streaming.

JPradun 07-11-08 12:35 PM

There are free, live feeds on the internet. Google is your friend.

VandeVelde could crack top 10, but even that is iffy.

save10 07-11-08 12:37 PM

thanks for the tip...will check it out. should have thought of the net.

FixdGearHead 07-11-08 12:42 PM

I believe Vaughters mentioned that a Top 10 for V (or was it Top 15?) would be a huge success. Top 5 would be a huge surprise IMHO; I just hope he bags a stage win.

rpmxs 07-11-08 05:41 PM

He seems to be in pretty decent form so far. I'd like to see him stay up there in the top 10, but I'm not sure the team is strong enough to keep him up there. I'd be surprised if he stayed in the top 10, I really don't think he'll nab a top 5 spot. I'd love to be wrong, though.

J.W. 07-14-08 12:49 PM

I now truely believe he has a chance at yellow.

pumpy schwartz 07-14-08 01:34 PM

vandevelde!

bdcheung 07-14-08 02:23 PM

He has no chance at yellow, but a top-10 finish isn't completely out of the question. He really lacks the team support in the high mountains of the Alps... that's where we'll see how well he can handle himself. Stage 16 and 17 will be the big revealers - back to back days of tough mountains.

save10 07-14-08 03:46 PM

well i watched today stage via the web feed (great tip) was late for work as a result. I was waiting for VdV to crack and he never did. I was getting quite nervous for him the last 5km. He was great. On his velonews interview he said he should have been more aggressive. That is saying something. Would have been cool to seem go with Schleck and the canaries.

I agree with your assessment of his chances, but as for team support, Evans also seems to be alone as soon as the road goes up.

Garmin is going to have to get someone (Millar?, Pate?, Maaskant?) into an early break in the Alps. Then he can drop back and help on the final climbs, a la Cancellara today.

Regardless, CSC and SD are going to have the real guns on stages 16 and 17, but none of those guns can TT. If VV and Evans (and maybe Menchov) can hold on through the Alps, they'll put minutes into the skinny kids on the penultimate stage.

Maybe we'll see a Garmin/Silence/Rabobank alliance, since none of their GC hopefuls seem to have a solid mountain domestique.

Spot on.

FixdGearHead 07-15-08 12:26 PM

If you're a fan of Garmin-Chipotle or US Cycling for that matter - be content with the current possibility that he's climbing his way into a Top 10 finish. For a team's first appearance in the TDF, that is a tremendous success.

Hopefully Garmin will recognize that accomplishment.

veloGeezer 07-15-08 12:33 PM

After yesterday I'm willing to listen to any talk of a high finish for him

He really surprised me. I honestly didn't expect him to do as well as he did

robema 07-15-08 12:55 PM

seems every favourite this year hasn't got the team....
so van de velde,why not?

Agree. If Evans were on CSC it would be over IMO.

marin1 07-15-08 02:15 PM

There are 3 mountain stages he has to make it through and CSC is going to try and shatter anyone in the top 5, it's not even half over yet, he has a long way to go with no team support. I'm not saying he can't, but one bad day and it is over.

Not too mention the fact that the stages between now and the Alps aren't particularly easy either. If the hilly stages of the first week were any hint, it will be a hard week of racing. I think what Voigt and Cancellara did on the way to Hautacam was just a preview of what we'll seed this week.

Millar is useless

Dude finished with the sprinters yesterday. He talks a mean game but he was a huge disappointment to Vandevelde.

AZ_Kurt 07-15-08 04:59 PM

Millar, that is...

Agreed that it would've been better for Millar to shepherd VV as far up Hautacam/Tourmalet as possible, but once he's popped, I think it's better for him to find the autobus and save it for another day. Now Millar is fresher for the Alps, and he'll be allowed to go up the road with impunity, being 30+ minutes back.

J.W. 07-15-08 05:39 PM

I think Trent Lowe can help VDV, along with Millar..

kuf 07-15-08 06:40 PM

Final podium guess:
Evans
Menchov
Vandevelde
