Rant about Ligget and Co.

Please excuse the following as I just felt like venting,
Well I considered myself lucky of been able to be in the US for a week where Versus is covering Le Tour. I thought it would be a relief of following it in the internet with a combination of german TV with Eurosports commentators streams. But I must say what Versus calls Tour coverage is not that at all but a mere Tour TV magazine format. The programming starts in the last third of the race and it mostly shows aerial heli views of the cyclists. The race is also constantly interrupted by interviews, which if you are a true fan would have already read in newspapers and internet, short snipets of fluff and advertising ( on top of the ad interruptions there are ads place in the bottom of the screen that actually interfere with the view of the peloton many times.) What is amazing that they repeat the show several times a day, so if they are dedicating all that air time to the Tour they should actually follow the race when it happens and then show that MAgazine format when is over.
Regarding the commentators, OMG, they might have all the experience and knowledge of the world but their information is mostly fluff. Very simple and basic, no talk about team strategy on real time race or on positioning, or real true history of the tour to fill up the the empty space (actually tour history is s shown in a snipet thus interrupting the coverage of the race). And truly I could care less what their personal score is regarding announcing the possible winner of the stage. I have not heard an intelligent discussion for example about the true merits of a cyclist and his possibilities of winning the tour. One of the big discussions in some countries is how the media pushed Valverde as a probable winner when he actually is not good in long races like this one. Or what is truly going to happen with the sport with the crubling of the pro tour, regarding riders rights and giving the power to the individual race organizers. How about grade of climb against length? Well I gave up I went back to internet streams....
I just wish that since a tv company places the sport so high in its tv programming, it would use the air time wisely.
Let me leave with a positive note... i like the coverage from inside the team cars...

So there... thanks for letting me vent...

Are you watching the Live coverage in the morning? Or the "enhanced coverage" at night.

I am not a fan of Hummer and Roll's coverage (I do like Roll though). I do like Phil and Pauls coverage though.

I could do without some of the stuff you mention, but if that's what they need to generate the ratings and the revenue needed to cablecast it, I guess it's still a lot better than the hour of highlights for the whole preceding week we used to get on ABC on Saturday afternoons. I like all the announcers, but I sure hate those inane Specialized and Cervelo commercials (although not as much as I hate that Bowflex exercise apparatus stuff).

I don't watch any big sporting event without live streaming web coverage, cable, and a host of web sites that 'fill-in' the details I need.

Phil & Paul sound like July to me. The Tour is here and that's good when I hear them bantering about.

Watch the enhanced coverage. Andreu and Ventura sit in and actually do fill dead time with race strategies, etc....

I like any TV coverage, it sure beats no TV coverage, hands down. I am not looking a gift horse in the mouth at any time!

Well said, you all have good points. Thank you for letting me vent... and I do agree some coverage is better than nothing at all.... But today I really got mad when they were like 8,4 miles to the end we got an ad and then they came back at like at 4 km from the end, and the whole front peloton had changed!!!! ugh!!!!

Yeah, I agree, that was pretty sad, having that commercial right in the middle of the run in!

If it's any consolation, commercials during the major moves on the course is not limited to cycling. My wife and I watch MotoGP and World Superbike just as avidly, and over the years we've gotten used to the realization that any major move on the track is going to be shown as replay, since Speed will invariably run a commercial during the pass.

During live coverage I can understand it, Murphy's Law and all that. But to have it invariably happen during an already edited, time delayed broadcast . . . . . .

I agree with the OP - I've been disappointed by the evening shows. I'd love to see more of the actual race with Ligget commentary, rather than the other guys.

For everyone who loves the tour; get a DVR and record the live broadcast. You will be happier.

I watch both the live coverage and the expanded "Prime Time" coverage just because I love to hear what Bob Roll has to say, plus the rider vignettes they do then that they don't do during the live coverage.

I just wish they did the Giro too. I like the whole Versus team and think that Hummer is an improvement over Trautwig. However, it was amazing today to see Hummer commentating on the Professional Bull Riding in nearby Tacoma, WA (taped replay), and then just as he signed off, have him come right back with the Tour from Digne les Bains!

I recall other posts listing websites with streaming coverage of the stages in their entirety.

I saw live coverage, and it truly was live coverage... woke up at 6:30 AM and watched it till the end... a much better job than previous days by the commentators, they even comented on grade of climb and length.... And they will repeat it tuesday and wenesday.... GOOD FOR THEM !!!!
Although, this thing of recycling fumes from your exhaust...in my country we call it smelling your own farts... the whole concept is pretty discusting... and they repeat it over and over...

I watch it every evening, and especially like the Cervelo commercials for their bikes and interviews with the engineers designing and testing them. I like the heli pictures of the beautiful countryside while keeping the peleton in view.
Wish regular TV would have bike commercials touting their products.

are phil and paul going to do the olympics? i have no idea who is going to call the road race for CBC, but whoever they are will have to be better than the dillweeds at NBC...

when i got OLN, i always taped the morning coverage live and watcheed it later...it was much better than prime time! i just had to remember to give some stages extra time.

I don't versus has any say in what shots they get to show. There share a feed with many many other stations and one central producer chooses what images to show.

i think everyone gets the feed from France 2, no one really has any control over the images.

i keep wondering what phil and paul said about some stuff: cadel evans suffering, pereiro's horrible crash, and menchov...did they say he was in a 'spot of bother'?

I like the live coverage in the morning much better. It takes them 20 minutes to show any riding on the evening broadcast.

I feel for Versus. I don't think they could ever make most bikeforums posters happy no matter what they did.

We live in a capitalist society. thre will be comercails.. and i thik tis great that i see specialized and cervelo and trek commercials.

my son has a specialized HotRock. and he think he has the best bike in the world cause not only does he see the teams on specialized on TV but also at the bike races and Tri's see the commercail give him that extra spark to turn his cranks.and be proud to be a cycelist.

yes i know it marketing but i'll take the comercails that help like these do.

Yes, this is true, except that Versus ditches the regular overlay graphics and does their own graphics. This is quite annoying, as the graphics done in France are FAR superior. I don't mind their particular take on the placings too much, as I understand that an American media company, trying to appeal to American viewers, is going to place particular focus on the American riders and teams. This appears to be a sore spot for some, but who do you suppose they're talking about in France and Italy? Anyway, aside from the leaderboard, as it were, I do greatly prefer the graphics supplied by the production company doing the actual filming.

I can see why the live telecast would have commercials near the end of the race.. because that's when they get the most viewers. But the enhanced coverage later at night, they could run those commercials late in race but just resume the race where the commercials left off without missing a few minutes of the end.
