I think Paul is relying more on his pet phrases this year because he doesn't have much time left after correcting all of Phil's mistakes. It seems that things are "all going a bit pear-shaped" for old Phil this time around.

This is fun and all, but last night I made the mistake of flicking the channels and catching the evening wrap-up with Craig Hummer and Bob Roll, and my gawd, they are freakin' painful to listen to. Could be partly due to their American accents, which sound grating by comparison, but still, Phil and Paul are veritable fonts of Shakespearean eloquence when put up against the likes of Craig and Bob.

Yes, I have to agree with you there. Along about this time each year, all the announcers begin to bother me, but Hummer is terrible. I suppose it's possible he's knowledgeable about cycling, but each time he demonstrates his knowledge, it seems like he's reading from "The Handbook of Cycling Jargon."

I got a bit sick of hearing about "rarified air" during these alpine stages (except the one time he said rarified earth instead - which was kind of nice, if only for the novelty value)

You got to hand it to Paul though for being pretty smooth on correcting all of Phil's mistakes. Phil just couldn't seem to figure out that Cadel Evans was not in the lead group on the last climb yesterday.

i watch the TDF on a Eurosport stream because no verses. One of the comentators often uses the phrase "gently slipping away" or "gently sliding out the back" or something like that when one of the sprinters or non-climbers gets dropped by the peleton on the HC climbs. Recalling the days when I was 60 pounds heavier and got dropped all the time on climbs....there is nothing gentle about it.

I am no big fan of either of them, but it has got to be pretty hard, carrying a 5 hour broadcast without being too repetitive and making an occasional fool of yourself.

You know, I think that's kind of a new-ish one. I don't recall him using it in past years, unless my hearing was impaired by excessive beverage consumption. Nevertheless, he does seem to be using it a lot. Maybe he comes up with a new one each year and tries to see how many times he can work it into the broadcast. "Losing his bottle" seems to be recent as well.
