I'll make some more wild, off the mark predictions about who'll be in the break:
Turpin, Gerrans, Tschopp, Tiralongo, Possoni, Brutt

How did Lance lose over 30s to Pettachi in this hilly stage? Was there a crash or is he that far behind in his fitness?

It was good to see a break succeed finally. Petacchi got up in the first group because they had delusions of catching the break and him winning the sprint finish. In all those narrow streets with the tight turns, it isn't surprising that there was a split in the chasers. Besides - at the end of a monstrously long stage, why kill yourself if you're not in the hunt for the stage win, or riding for GC?

He's a domestique. He's riding for Levi. In the last week there are two stages that, depending on the outcome of the stage 12 time trial, should sort out the winner.
He's riding in support. He's not going to win, try to win, whatever. He's trying to get fitness and save for the determing stages.

I like that he told people to relax. He basically knows that he is in no shape to to win this thing, basically using it to get ready for the TdF

He's behind and is not their GC candidate anyway. Out of competition for several years, recent crash, age, etc. I'd be surprised if he can even win a stage.

He lost 30 sec. because he was caught when the peleton split late in the race and he finished with the second group, having no incentive to try to catch the lead group alone. In short, this stage result is no indicator of his overall fitness.
