You think it's easy being Lanterne Rouge?
Stage 13 was 200km over three climbs, and spread stragglers and small groups up and down the road. The complacent racer can easily loose track of his competition on such a course. Well, the peleton came in at 6:43 today and the autobus at 20:21 (with third place LR Klier in seat #83). The second 'bus arrived at 23:44, with van Hummel in seat #137. Guess what? Second place Lanterne Hutarovich was right in front of him, crossing in seat #127.
Result: Van Hummel maintains his 26:22 lead in the LR.
To achieve distinction in a major stage race, one must always have a strategy, know who the main competition is and know where those riders are on course at all times. Mark your man!
Other notes: We're down to 164 riders.
Flash: Pate (159th place) leads Farrar (158th place) by only one minute in the American Lanterne standings!
Beppu of Japan is disapointing those who favored him to take the LR. He's in 144th place, 40 minutes down on van Hummel.
Just six minutes separate 10 racers for the third podium step of the Lanterne Rouge.
See you off the back,

Monty Python said it best: "I'm not dead yet."
After a gutsy solo ride, van Hummel crossed 12 minutes after any other rider and nearly 46 minutes after the stage winner. Early reports are this was good enough to beat the grim reaper, the broom wagon and the ToF time keepers and stay alive.
Van Hummel is proving to be a worthy Lanterne. He now has an over 40 minute cushion.
I've heard accepting fan pushes can get you disqualified, although really what can the rider do if someone runs up and shoves their derriere? Anyway, I wonder how much of the last climb van Hummel got pushed up?

A few rest day notes from the back of the pack:
162 riders have made it to the second rest day. Historically, that's pretty good, but the 2009 Tour is "back loaded" and we have a brutal final week coming up.
The 2009 Tour's oldest rider, Inigo Cuesta (40) is having a fine ride and is in 99th place, 1:12 back.
Cavendish and all his stage wins are in 139th on GC, 1:49 behind the Yellow Jersey.
Beppu and Arashiro are stayin' alive at 129th and 143rd. I think we're going to have the ToF's first finisher from Japan this year.
Farrar made a bold move on Stage 15 and has seized the American Lanterne Rouge from Pate. Farrar, in 158th, now has around a 4 minute cushion on his countryman.
Hutarovich, in 161st and 2:23 back, could be the Lanterne in a normal year. Tough luck to ride against a Red Jersey juggernaut like van Hummel.
Get some rest, Kenny! Hydrate! And good luck!

Well, yeah, but he is his team's 9th rider. Perhaps it is Continental team Skil-Shimano that shouldn't have been invited to the Tour.
In a bar in Amsterdam in 2063 there'll be a couple young bike racers recounting their exploits. The bartender will jerk his thumb toward an old guy in the corner booth and say, "Ken bereed in de Tour tegen Armstrong en Contador." Their eyes will widen, and all they've ever accomplished on a bike will seem like nothing.

Another dominating LR performance by KRvH today in the 16th stage!
On a morning when any mere mortal would have just slept in, van Hummel instead tackled the HC and 1st category climbs like a true Lanterne champion, eventually coming in @ 34:43, some 7 minutes after any other rider. He now has over 45 minutes on runner up Hutarovitch and nearly an hour on third LR podium step Steven de Jongh (Quick Step).
Not looking too far ahead, but if van Hummel can just keep from being time limited tomorrow*, his tenacity will be honored by getting to start Thursday's individual time trial first. I wonder: has anyone else in the history of ToF started the prologue TT, the team TT and the final TT as first-rider-on-course in the same year?

*Two category 1 climbs, a category 2 climb, and then two more category 1 climbs!
Edit: fact check! Skil-Shimano did NOT start the Stage 4 TTT first.

Thanks for the analysis and color commentary tcs. Phil & Paul don't talk much about the LR. It's all "Lance this and Lance that, Jens Voigt fell on his face, Lance asked about him."

You can learn interesting things by keeping an eye on the goings on at the back of the pack.
I was inspired by Wim because he became the Lanterne as a consequence of being the smartest domestique in the race.
It's a lot different this year, but no less illuminative. I admire KRvH because through a set of curious events he got an unlikely chance to be in the big show - and he's doing his damdest. Hope he makes it to Paris.

This whole Lantern Rouge has been overshadowed by the spectre that is UCI and ASO's williingness to fix results. The very fact that they have made exception to the time limit in order to allow Kenny to continue to participate demonstrates their intent to bend rules or choose to enforce or not based on their own agenda.

Also reported on Velonews Live.
Judging from how KRvH was losing more time on the climbs than overall, I guessed he had been forcing the pace on decents and on today's queen stage (unfortunately in the rain) might be tempted to take chances to steal back seconds from the time limit.
Here's hoping the Brave Little Toaster's injuries are not severe and he's back racing soon.

This development gives Belarusian National Road Champion Hutarovich the Lanterne on the road. He had about a 12 minute cushion on de Jongh at the start of today's stage.

With today's big shake-up, here's what it looks like:
LR: Hutarovich (BLR)
+13 minutes: de Jongh (NED)
+22 minutes: Klier (GER)
+23 minutes: Terpstra (NED)
+24 minutes: Farrar (USA)
It's still a close race for the third podium step, and the next big test is Friday's time trial. In the prologue, Hutarovich finished 180th (a.k.a. last), de Jongh finished 176th, Klier finished 172nd, Terpstra finished 59th and Farrar finished 77th.
