Is JAXGTR the ProCycling Prefect, Hall Monitor, D'''''?

    Discuss,

And a bloody good prefect he is.

    Three cheers for jaxgtr!

Sorry mate, but, I was/am frustrated by seeing threads merged together and posts moved about that leave both myself and others sometimes looking like bigger fools than we deserve to. And, that's saying a lot. Because, some of us can look like plenty big fools all on our own. Thank you very much.

Nope, I am cool with this. I understand your frustration, but at the same time, we had a lot of people frustrated with the hijacking of a lot of threads recently, so I am trying to keep thing balanced. Unfortunately, when moved, they dump in date\time order, not in sequence.

That certainly isn't the intent - and I merged one set of threads after a bit of deliberation. There are a lot of threads here, and we will consolidate a bit to try to prevent it from getting too hard to remember where discussions are.

I'm going to have to agree with bigfred on this. And trust me, both of us are always disagreeing with each other sometimes, but this is totally ridiculous. Threads being merged and moving stuff around. It speaks of huge censorship. I don't like it. It's not cool and it's a total kneejerk overreaction. If you just hired some guy off the street who knew nothing of the sport at all, and gave him the guidelines to follow for moderation, then I guarantee you this. None of this would happen.

I just feel that the moving of the threads is getting to be akin to censorship. Merging a legit post or reply to a post to a huge thread is the same as putting everything into the waste bin. And perhaps it isn't the moderators that are to blame. Maybe they are.

The guidelines are specific, but there are parts that are too subjective. So given the subjectivity, any moderator has the potential to turn into an overzealous hall monitor, as my arch nemesis/buddy described in his original post.

Merging threads that are on the same, or quite similar topics is pretty standard throughout the site. For example, today there was a thread started specifically for speculating on what was going to happen in Stage 7. That got merged to the stickied thread.

One thing that a significant number of folks have complained about is the number of threads which turn to the topic of doping, and we're trying to be sensitive to this by removing gratuitous postings about doping from threads that were started with the intent of discussing the racing at hand. At the same time, we don't want to just completely shut down threads that are started to discuss the topic - but being sensitive to the fact that the majority of "Lance" and "Greg" threads arrive at the topic, we are perhaps a bit quick to combine them. The alternative is numerous threads of various shades of "How Great is Lance", "How Evil is Lance", "How Great was Greg", and "How Bitter is Greg". They have a way of proliferating, and there is inevitably contention in the threads that often gets out of control.

We are walking kind of a fine line here, and since nobody wins when the horse-beating begins in earnest, we do try to head things off, rather than get stuck dealing with the resulting blow-ups. I don't know if you were here a few years back when one of the moderators and a number of Australian BF members got into a spat, but it was a big-time lose-lose for a lot of people. We really don't want history to repeat itself with this. Not everyone is going to be happy with all the moderating decisions that get made, but you can be assured they're not being made at random, and not with the intent to piss off specific people. I've found that a little tolerance towards others whom you don't agree with, can go a long way.

Let's try to enjoy the Tour, and having a place to talk about it with a measure of civility.

    Thanks,

Yes, I was there when it all went down a few years back. I guess that's how Aussies are. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, my good Aussie friends like to point out that it's their culture to "pay somebody out". It's nothing personal. It's just a way of smack talking.

I don't even like what other people post, but I do have to agree with them that the merging of the thread is getting way out of hand. I've read this complaint not only by the original poster, but by other users on the merged threads as well.

There are a number of threads to choose from to participate in. Even somewhat duplicate thread, IMO, need to stay unmoderated. The forum regulates itself in that the unpopular threads eventually work their way to the bottom of the page and then disappear. When a moderator regulates this mechanism, that moderator imposes their own ideas on what should be allowed and where instead of letting the people decide with their own replies.
