HC Climbs
When did they start having this rating.
NOT when did they first climb one of the climbs that today is HC, when did they have somethig rated higher than 1.
I know it is after 1970, pretty sure after 1975. I could did it out by checking the race logs on a site, but thought i'd both be lazy and give someone a chance to show their knowledge. Heck if someone know this one they might also know the answer to when a climb that is now HC was first done. I would not be surprised if it was before climb ratings existed.

A climb can vary in category depending on other factors such as when in the tour/stage it happens as well as what else there is in the stage.

Looks like it is right. Like I said I have a way to check, but it would be tedious having to check each year.
But there was the perfect (or near perfect) check. In 1978 L'Alpe d'Huez case a category 1, in 79 it was HC. And pretty much this is a climb that will go up the switchbacks, the same side, every time.
BTW I found a nice trick question.
Who won the L'Alpe d"Huez stage in '79
Trick because both 17 and 18 ended at L'Alpe d"Huez.

Coppi? Dude try 49, not 79. Without googling it, I think Coppi won on the l'Alpe circa 1951. he was dead long befor 1979.

I tell people that I rode up L'Alpe de Huez past where Coppi got off and walked. Of course the road wasn't paved as far up then and the stage ended further down the mountain.

I will go with 1979 as well. I haven't missed a Tour since 1975 but for some reason I don't remember hearing about HC climbs until a few years after I started tuning in on the BBC. Weren't both the Alpe d'Huez and the Col du Galibier in the race that year? I'm pretty sure the Galibier is HC, but I have been wrong before.
I think van Impe was the winner on one of those hard stages but damned if I can remember if it was Alpe d'Huez or not. It is rough getting old, your memory is the 2nd thing to go downhill.
