A Ideal Team

How would you try to form one?

- Superstar Team (Astana: BUT one too many stars)
- Imbalance (Silence-Lotto: Very strong leader, not too competent team)
- Balance (Saxo Bank: Strong young climber in Schleck, loyal veteran in Voight, TT king in Cancellara; & Garmin-Slipstream)
- No GC (Columbia-HTC: Strong team but GC contenders fading out)

How would you assemble your 9 man squad in terms of cyclist types (e.g. 1 x GC, 1 x sprint, 2 x veteran etc)? Ala computer games.

All depends on what you goals are, you budget, and what you have to start with. Realistically in a given year, there only about 5-10 people who have a legitimate shot at winning the TDF. If you don't have one of those guys, you have to focus your efforts elsewhere, i.e. KOM, points jersey, stage wins etc.

So you then build your team around your stregths, and concentate on the goals that are acheivable.

When Discovery had Amstrong in his prime, they didn't bring sprinters and leadout men.

Conversely you don't see a lot of GC contenders with Boonen.

AFAIK, most teams have a lot more riders than 9 guys. There are a lot more races out there than grand tours.

I suspect Tony Martin considers himself a GC contender (no doubt he'd admit it's a longshot, but nonetheless).
