Is it carbonated or flat Coke?

I've been reading from some websites that endurance athletes including cyclists drink flat coke for energy. It makes sense that flat coke would work out better than carbonated coke to eliminate excessive burping and what not. However, when I watch racing, I see the domestiques, carrying the unopened cans to other riders. It's unopened so I'm assuming that they're actually drinking carbonated coke? Or do they come as pre-flat?

I doubt they are concerned about having to belch.

I like flat Pepsi when I run. More bouncing means more belching and stomach discomfort if it's carbonated. But on the bike, it's not an issue. At least not for me.

It's often carbonated and usually not cold.

Seen a lot of carbonated cola given out at the TDF at the feed zones. They have a load of sugar and caffine. I may try one at a rest stop this Sat at the Tour D Tow in Bartow Fl Sat there is also a crit Sat Pm and Sun PM.

Lemond claims that a can of coke saved his arse during one brutal alps stage.

Boo[nen]!

If you're on the road there's not too much bumping to be had (hopefully)...

Marathoners back in the 80s used to get flat coke or pepsi from their helpers or whatever they have, back before there were endurance oriented sports drinks. Im sure the ones they get in the feed zones these days are just regular cans of coke. It sure helps me especially after a ride or race when I am compeltely drained.
