    Giro in the US

    Publicity stunt and logistical nightmare?

    Or worthy tribute?

One solution: Race on trainers whilst on the flight from DC/NYC to Italy.

sounds like our boy angelo z. is doing his crazy act again. who says the
tour of california won't get quality riders in the upcoming years? whether
it's the insanely long transfers, the brutally difficult mountain stages
or dangerous finishing circuits (most years all 3), zomegnan seems to
try his hardest to perturb the riders. makes for great viewing for us tifosi
though. (potential) manuevers like a (potential) start in the d.o.c. u.s.a.
will only help the riders choose a 9-10 day tour with great weather and
a challenging course instead of the sadomasochism of the giro...

If you could put the Tour of Cali, the Tour of Missouri, and the renewed Tour of Colorado all together in the spring, you would give teams a reason to bring the whole team over and race all three as a warmup for the summer.

If the Giro came to NYC I just might cry with joy. That being said, it would definitely suck. 8 hour flight and 6 hour time difference? Not so great...

Bringing the Tour to London is quite a different thing from bringing it across an ocean!

While this could be cool, the cost to do this would be unreal for a prologue.

If DC is going to support them enough it wouldn't be cost prohibitive. Although that would suck to not get a rest day after the flight back. you'd see a stage like the radio ban TDF stage or the boycotted circuit from the giro last year.

Knowing a little about the innards of the various departments that manage traffic in the DC area, I don't see it happening.
Stupidity got us into this mess - why can't it get us out?

Now DC authorities are pushing for 2 stages in the Giro. If they're going to have it there, might as well have a bit more, followed by a 3rd rest day?

with all the local politicos & security concerns, it would seem to be unlikely at best.
money talks though, and in a blah economy even funny colored money might triumph
over red tape. wonder how many foreign tourists would visit for the opening of the
giro? the exchange rate for the euro (last i checked) is favorable.

Question: Are road races really that popular? As in their perceived economic benefits. I can see how the world cup and olympics might bring in the bucks (and spend a ton more!) but will something like the giro be a genuinely big attraction? (as opposed to, say, the TdF)

Possibly two stages, both within the DC city limits. I can see a good time trial going off in the city limits, but not sure how you fit a good mass start stage in here.

I think it would do well. The local cycling community is substantial, a bit of publicity can really drum up interest for a couple days, and downtown DC is pretty used to dealing with temporary street closures. I can imagine a prologue with a course that incorporates the National Mall. There's also plenty of options for a stage 1 with a finish in a prominent location with massive attendance.

It's two hours from me, but I'd take the days off to go and watch.
The search for inner peace continues...

ok so, i live in DC, and i would LOVE to be able to go to the giro. i would **** bricks. and if it does come here, i will be like, "YESSSS"

BUT, objectively, i have no idea why this is even being considered.

-it is travel that athletes from all over the world DO NOT need to or want to do.

-more fuels used up in the world's airspace

-its the tour of italy... what does that have to do with dc at all?

-i'm not sure if we have world class course material here (actually there are plenty of interesting things that could be done)
