tour of california bags its first big italian rider

lots of speculation whether the tour of california can compete/survive
at the same time as the giro d' italia. different types of riders have different
objectives. obviously, liquigas wants a good showing at the giro but this is
heartening news for the usa domestic scene:

it will be interesting to see whom liquigas sends in support. they do
have one of the better-equipped gc teams. would like to see leipheimer
really "earn it" over one of the better gc young guns in the peleton.

Don't be surprised. I expect that many of the serious TdF GC contenders and teams will do ToC instead of Giro (or both, with non-TdF participants contesting Giro).

this, i think, is what the toc organizers and fans are hoping for. the initial fear when the tour
of california announced its move to giro time-late april/early may was that very few (if any)
of the top-flite italian riders would show (whether pressured by their team/sponsors/family etc.).
it seems logical that many tdf contenders would rather go hard for a week to 10 days (even with
the transatlantic flights), then refine their form leading into july. racing the giro with the possible
intent (based on how the team is contending) to drop out before/during the last week or even riding
the giro giving less than 100% would not seem to fit into the plans of many squads where every
rider at a gt is crucial.

hopefully, we'll see several other italian riders of nibali's (near) quality in this and future toc's.
