Di Luca suspended for two years

Link.

What if he retires, does he still have to pay up? Why not hand down a lifetime ban for second offense? Why not a lifetime ban for the first for that matter?

A large number of riders (perhaps most) would be incapable of paying that amount in fines yet the UCI will deny them the ability to make a living if they do not pay, (But that is the whole point).

He'll be 35, come July 2011. Too old. 2 year suspension should effectively end his competitiveness. He will obviously retire & won't have to pay the fine.

"The amount of this income shall be as assessed by the UCI, provided that the net income shall be assessed at 70 (seventy) % of the corresponding gross income."

Wow. Only 30% income tax rate on on someone grossing that much? I'd assume that different countries have different effective income tax rates?

Personally, I think everyone should have to pay the same dollar amount to their government for being alive rather than a percentage of their income. It's not fair that you paid $40 for maintenance of that road and I paid $5 because I flip burgers...but we are both equally allowed to use it or btich about it to our elected officials, etc. If the government body needs more money then pay for it by assessing retail sales tax on the devices (cars, motorcycles, bicycles) to pay for it..

That's not a topic for this forum. Go to P&R if you want to get sidetracked on that discussion.

I've never been a DiLuca fan. I'll shed no tears, although I do acknowledge that the duel he had with Menchov in the Giro last year was exciting.
