RIP Marco Pantani, Il campione del ciclismo
It's been six years since the death of one of the greatest climbers and unarguably, one of the most tragic figures of pro cycling. I ran across the following quotes last year and they are striking in their contrast between despair and hope:
“I’m left all alone. No one managed to understand me. Even the cycling world and even my own family.”
Marco Pantani (note from his last passport)
“Marco’s death also serves as a call for friendship: for the gift of friendship and of hope. That no one be alone. That no one feel or be left alone. We must believe in life with the same passion that Marco demonstrated in accomplishing his victories.”
Bishop Antonio Lanfranchi (from Marco Pantini’s funeral homily)
I for one pray that the cycling world never forgets Marco and the pitfalls of his fantastic, yet sad career. May we all learn from his mistakes and do our best to "believe in life". If you haven't seen it yet, Graham Watson has a nice memorial to Il Pirata on his website:

That is a wonderful to a fabulouslty gifted but troubled athlete. I do not think he would hae been wat he was without his demons, they were part of what made him great. He was ruthless and inspiring when he raced. I will never forget him...if ever an athlete had a perfect nickname, it was Marco Pantani.
Thanks for sharing that link,

for a very good look at the man and the legend (and no they are not the same) read
Man on the Run by Manuela Ronchi, and
The Death of Marco Pantani, A biography by Matt Rendell for two different views of Pantani
A very tragic story indeed.

What actually were Pantani's biggest demons???...
I think they went far deeper than just being banned from cycling due to doping, maybe he didn't tell anyone the real reasons.

Thank you for sharing the book recommendations (I went ahead and ordered Man on the Run and look forward to reading it). For anyone else interested in the subject, Marco Pantani: The Legend of a Tragic Champion edited by John Wilcockson is a good read as well.
