Giro 2010 - Stage 17 - May 26 - Brunico Bruneck - Peio Terme - 173 Km
|
good stage for a opportunistic gt contender that's fallen out of contention on either of the last two mountain stages.
remaining contenders will likely be recovering, marking each other & biding their time till the last 3 stages. |
Looking forward to seeing this stage on Universal....I've spent 5 vacations since 2003 skiing in Val di Sole and staying in the town of Dimaro, which is about 5 km west of Male and 20 km from the finish in Peio. The racers will roll right through town, one block from the hotel that I stay in. I have a friend there that I will ask to take pictures.

don't know exactly how steep that finish is but expect liquigas to send nibali out on a
suicide mission to force arroyo, evans, et al to chase hard with basso being the benificiary... unless cunego or sastre strikes first... |

Anyone got the gradients? Hoping for some fun attacks tomorrow... but who knows, could be a conservative day.

That could be a dangerous strategy. Cadel has been riding like a beast. If Nibali goes, so does Evans, Sastre, Vino, and Scarponi. The way this Giro has been, I wouldn't be risking accidentally unhitching Basso by sending up a violent attack by Nibali. Evans seems like the biggest threat to Basso right now. Couple of more big mountain stages and another ITT to go. I think Liquigas will set the pace up to the big mountain, but see if one of the other attacks and roll with them. The other have to attack and drop Basso at some point. I think Arroyo and Porte will be victims of attrition one way or another.
I see Arroyo and Porte losing 40 - 100 seconds per mountaintop finish stage, and Arroyo losing even more in the ITT. I see a battle between Basso and Evans come the end. |

Not so dangerous. If those guys follow right away, Nibali steps off the gas.

They've pretty much been riding the whole race with a team support and they're right in the mix. Basso has the best support left. We'll see how much of an advantage having the strongest team is. |

I gotta feeling Evans is going to go on the attack. He's been looking very strong. I was surprised he beat Basso in TT after the way Basso looked the other day. Evans is all one his own. One of this stages he's gonna go for it.

I don't think so. Stage 19 looks more like one that Evans and/or Vino would have a shot at getting away/staying away on. This one has "breakaway gets caught by the base of the last climb" written all over it.
Who knows. Either way, all of these guys are one bad day from going Wiggins out there. There are plenty of tough stages left to make anyone have a bad day. |

http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/3259/palade.gif I'm not sure if that's difficult enough for any of the favourites to get away, especially since it's still a long way to the finish from there, but they should get rid of most of the domestiques I guess. |
i like liquigas' chances in the next couple of days with super mountain
domestique szmyd, basso, nibali and kiserlovski currently in 9th about 9 minutes back (just ahead of cunego). evans, arroyo and the other podium hopefuls are gonna need to pull out something special to overcome the overall options & firepower of liquigas. |

Looks like they are taking an additional rest day today. ;)

can't blame 'em.....

yawn

bored as hell... lets see what happens tomorrow...
|
Not the most exciting, to be sure.... I agree with the ES guys, there's some exhausted fellas in that race right now.
|
That finish was not the sort where one contender was going to take a bunch of time out of any of the others. Stages 19 and 20 will be entirely different.
