I Was Excited About the ATOC But Can't Watch Ads Anymore

Apologize in advance for this public rant, and I'm probably in the minority, but I just cannot stomach any longer watching the constant parade of commercials during the ATOC. I cannot understand why there is no backlash from the public re saturation advertising. I'm reluctant to say this, because it's probably unAmerican, but having spent many years in Europe I was struck by the number and frequency of TV ads, street ads, billboard ads, radio ads in this country (my country) upon my return...I mean it's crazy too much.

Versus is pretty bad. Plus, they have a bunch of promo stuff as part of the broadcast (Kenda 1k banner, etc.). I know that's what they're in it for. But jeez, they're to in you face about it. They've turned Liggett and Sherwen into a couple of ad shills.

I can't stand the damn Road ID commercials. How much money could they have for marketing. They're on at every commercial break. Even on Universal Sports. They must have gotten some sort of bulk discount for buying 500,000 spots. Probably got another 100,000 for free. Talk about annoying. What's even better, is that they have mister personality, Levi Leipheimer, in them. Now they added dumbass Bob Roll on 'em. They're killing me.

Meh, laying on couch watching in a 60" tv or sitting at desk looking at a computer monitor. Not a tough choice.

Toss your plasma and get something that uses less energy than a CRT.

I'm just glad to not see cavemen and "born from jets" at every break. I do feel quite sorry for what they've reduced Phil and Paul to. Even with a title, they want to snatch away his dignity.

Watch online. But. Coverage didn't start til the last half.
Or, record. I super fast forward thru' the commercials, as I hate them too. I don't want to see any of them.

Its sad. I used tolerate all of the nonsense because Paul and Phil were very enjoyable to listen too. But things have definitely gone south over the past two seasons. Seems like they can't go 2 minutes without having to mention some sponsor/promotional item.

I pre-record and have auto commercial skip but Versus still kept me busy on the skip-forward button. It's a shame because there was some great bike racing in there - exciting finale today!
I just heard today about how good the online tracker was, if it's the same way next year, I'll probably watch it online.
Versus isn't the best but at least they responded nicely to my complaint mail about stage 3.

As for Road ID, they need a new marketing team. The Leipheimer one was survivable but the Bob Roll one is just plain bad.

I tried watching one stage without the dvr and the commercials were so distracting I gave up. I'm really starting to dislike the Phil & Paul show....it's getting way old. Not just the promo stuff, but the repetition of so many comments. Not that I enjoy sports commentating all that much in general, but they need new blood....

The universal sports coverage of the Giro has been a fresh of breath air, proves that cycling coverage need not be carpet bombed with commercials and thier more minimalistic commenting is much more tolerable for anyone that already knows the basics of cycling.

Watching both the Giro and ATOC it definitely seems as though Versus has about 3x the commercials and breaks as Universal. I didn't really realize just how annoying Phil Liggett is (as well as Bob "The Shill" Roll, but that's another issue) until watching the Giro for a few stages. I think there must be something in Phil's contract that states "There must be no more than 0.5 seconds of dead air for the duration of any event".

It will also be interesting to see how much LA cheerleading there is on a Universal aired event compared to a Versus event.

I pity you having in years past see on that 60 inch screen Bobky in his birthday suit on the trainer or in drag, or Smiling Bob on those Enzyte commercials or Extenze.

Universal really needs to mut the audio on the helo cams. Listening to that whoop whoop all the time is like Chinese water torture.
Cycling is all about selling product, but I think it's gone too far. I noticed in interviews with Continental riders at the ToC, they all seem to openly talk about getting their sponsors on the screen - rather than leading the bike race.
