they proly are but methinks they are gonna kill the golden goose if they "force"
sastre to race the tdf; he's not 28 anymore. guess they would rather have him
finish tenth in the tdf vs a potential podium place at the vuelta (as always, the vuelta
gets no love).
i can't think of anyone off hand who's raced more gt's in the
last decade and most of them in a top ten capacity-underrated.

Professional Fuss-Budget
Uhm... sounds like he's hedging because of a crash-induced back injury. I can't see how they can be ticked off at him for that, especially since he kept going in the Giro despite the injuries, at least in part for the sake of the team.

Short term - not so good for them. Flip side - would give them a chance to either give everything to earning stage wins, or grooming a new GC candidate.

true dat, since sastre is no spring chicken. methinks haussler would be a good candidate; he strikes me as an all-rounder

Doubtful. Haussler has pretty much said that he doesn't have the desire to train as much as is needed to be consistently on top form, and I think he said he doesn't plan on being a pro cyclist for much longer.

To me, he came off as someone who just really loves to party; he mentioned that the night before he won a stage of the Vuelta a España he was out at a discothèque, and I think he recently got busted for a DUI. But, like you said: you never know.

think you're right about haussler's "committment." seems like he's not the type to
totally drink the kool-aid and walk the team line. tremendous talent though.
most of the time-in any sport-these kinda guys lose interest, burn out, get
involved with things/people they shouldn't and just make all-around bad choices.
every once in a while though, one of them can harness that "healthy skepticism"
and do it their way-at least for a time...hopefully haussler will figure it out.
along with kreuziger, nibali, ebh, gilbert and a few others, he's one of my favorite
younger riders to watch.

Cycling, in my opinion, doesn't get anywhere near the respect--for the effort of the athletes to just make it there--it deserves [in the US]. I can see where Haussler is coming from. What other sport demands so much from its athletes, and for relatively little pay?

touché. 100% agree. in cycling, i see more of the overused "for the love of the sport/game" dedication than i do in other professional sports; it's proly magnified precisely because
of the relatively inequitable time/effort expended to $ earned. that is part of the appeal for me. the suffering (sastre's giro is a prime example) is another component.

I agree that they should let him focus on the Vuelta. He obviously ran into problems at the Giro and he deserves the chance to rest up and get healthy. They have a good enough team to focus on stage wins at the TDF.

Cervelo's got Xavier tondo,with a little work this guy can be a GC,look at his win in paris nice,and his riding in the giro.

I agree, but when he's on he's on and look at all the former "Domestiques" that switch teams and become GC contenders "Sastre","van de velde" i'm sure there are more.
