French competitive this year
With French riders winning several stages in this years TDF can we assume that the peloton is cleaner than it has been in the past. Also, several riders in the RS squad seemed much more tired than in the past. Can we assume that Lance and team were afraid of higher scrutiny and rode cleaner this year.

It all has to do with doping. If you don't see the possible connection perhaps you may wish to study more about PED in pro cycling.

I think that Hinault's actions in '86 put a curse on the French in the TDF, and the curse kept building. Armstrongs similar actions regarding AC lifted the curse and now French cycling will make a comeback.
