Reports: Mosquera positive at Vuelta

Spanish media outlets are reporting that Ezequiel Mosquera, a stage-winner and second overall at the 2010 Vuelta a España, has tested positive.


Mosquera rode an aggressive Vuelta.

The Spanish daily MARCA is citing unnamed sources that Mosquera and another teammate on the Xacobeo-Galicia team failed doping controls during the recent Spanish tour, which ended September 19 in Madrid with Mosquera on the second step of the podium. There was no specific reference as to the substance for which Mosquera is alleged to have tested positive.

The riders evidently have not been notified by anti-doping officials.

Xacobeo-Galicia sport director Alvaro Pino told the Spanish wire service EFE the team has not received advisories from any anti-doping officials.

“Someone just told me and I surprised because we on the team are sure that this doping case is impossible,” Pino said. “I still have not spoken to Ezequiel, but I will try to in the next few hours.”

Mosquera, 34, had the best Vuelta of his career, winning the decisive summit finish at Bola del Mundo and finally finishing on the podium following three finishes in the top-5.

Mosquera recently signed a contract to join the Vacansoleil team in Holland in a two-year deal. Even before the latest doping reports, officials from the Spanish team Xacobeo-Galicia were speaking of ending its support of the squad going into next season.


If true, the report would have a devastating impact on the Vuelta and Spanish cycling. The reports come on the same day that three-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador was suspended after he tested positive during the 2010 Tour.

Dare to dream???? They sacrificed their dreams right at the moment when they decided to enrich their performance with epo's. I have no sympathy for people who try to get rich and then go and rob a bank. Cheating is not a dream. Then it becomes something else completely.

But your not stopping doping one at a time. Despite all the efforts, doping appears to still be prevalent, and we're jsut replacing one doper with another.

Man, all the journalists spent the entire year talking about how clean cycling is now. In 2010 a former doper won the Giro, the TdF winner tests positive, and the Vuelta runner up tests positive. This sucks. I'm naive and thought cycling had taken a step forward recently.

The guy won TDF and he doped. This will get out there and racing will not be as popular as it was before. Profits, probably being the main drive behind doping, will go down as well. What will happen next, I don't know. Hopefully they will come to their senses and race with their hearts.

All that certainly happened after Landis was stripped of his TDF win, and after TDF winners Patani, Riis and Ulrich were shown to have doped.
