Nazi Tank?
While watching Paris-Nice today, I heard that "Leopard" from Leopard-Trek was the name of a German tank in WWII....I'm a little troubled by that...

Don't be so troubled. The WWII German Army didn't have a "Leopard" Tank (though they did have Panthers and Tigers)...the Leopard 1 was introduced in the German Army in 1965, and was followed by the Leopard 2, currently the German Army's main battle tank. I was watching the broadcast when they were talking about it also, and they got their facts wrong. More likely, the team is named after the current tank (arguably the best tank in the world, alongside the M1 Abrams).

P.S, just for the sake of argument, if the team was named, say, Panther-Trek after an actual WW2 German tank, it still wouldn't be that big of a deal. Many Germans today dissociate the actions/history of the German Army with the actions of the Nazi government, just the way Americans usually dissociate our military's actions with the policies of the Democrats or Republicans in elected office (ever seen/heard of the "I support the troops, not the war" slogans?). And rightfully so that they should be proud of their army's history....the German Army of that period was one of the most professional and proficient forces the world has ever seen, to the point that a large amount (read: most) American doctrine is based in many ways off the WW2 German doctrine. FYI.

I'm a little more worried about that hideous blue-green color on the bike than what the commentators said to fill a few seconds of time.

I don't see what the problem is. The Canadian Army has Leopard 2 tanks, as do the Dutch and many other Nato and non-Nato countries.

Leopard is the current Bundeswehr main battle tank; they also sell them to foreign countries like Canada, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Leopard II is comparable to the U.S. M1 Abrams. In fact, the M1A1 Abrams was upgunned from the old British 105mm main gun to the 120mm Rheinmetall smoothbore introduced on the Leopard II.
"Panzer" is the German word for "armor" or "tank"; the WW2 tanks named after big cats were the "Tiger" and "Panther".

While we're talking about ww2-era German tanks with feline names, they also had the Lynx, which was a heavily modified Panzer II. It was essentially a command and reconnaissance vehicle, built on an obsolete, though upgraded, chassis. They also had the Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger, which were non-turreted, limited-traverse versions of their namesakes. Other armored vehicles with animal names included the Nashorn (rhinoceros), Elefant, Hetzer (hunting dog), Brummbar (grizzly bear), Wespe, Grille, and many more. Not that any of this has anything to do with cycling, but there it is. Yes, I'm a tank nerd. My avatar photo is the Panther in the Jacques Littlefield collection on Portola Valley, CA. Great place to tour, if you're in the area, and they're still open.

Really, some people need to find something important to worry about, and lord knows if it was Ligget or Roll that said it it's only got about a 50% chance of being correct.

Maybe that is why they are trying like heck to not have people pronounce Leopard like the animal but instead as LEO - Pard.

"is that our current pope on the left?"
No, I think he's the shy one on the right. Hasn't quite decided on the SS or the priesthood.
