Spoilers In the Title

While it isn't explicitly stated in the forum sticky, the warning that there will be spoilers inside threads pretty clearly implies, to me anyway, that there should not be spoilers in the thread title. I would like to be able to visit this forum during the day, prior to watching the stage in the evening, without seeing a spoiler in a thread subject.

Some moderator clarification on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

And if there are spoilers inside, the title should mention that, like "Yadda yadda [spoiler]".

Or if you really want to avoid spoilers you avoid message boards about the race until after you've watched the race.

So basically the problem is that none of us get to watch TV while at work then, huh?

The problem is that people can't figure out that if you really want to avoid spoilers you avoid any source that may ruin it for you.

Oh Fark Off! In this day and age of everything always on, all the time, I'm supposed to pull the plug on EVERYTHING for a month just because I can't watch the broadcast at 7:00AM??? Again, I clearly implore you to sit and spin.

If you can't tell, I STRONGLY agree with the OP.

I also find it highly ironic that my bike friendliest "likes" on Facebook all get turned off for the month. They lose any chance of click-throughs from me because they have put winners in the title of their wall post...and I am not alone in this. Idiots.

The idea goes back to moving paper in the olden days...big headlines move paper. Made sense then, as there was no TV, maybe radio, but no chance to "time-shift" a broadcast of a newsworthy event beyond newsreels in the movie theater.

Now, it works in a negative fashion. Teaser headlines entice clickthroughs, spoiler headlines tell you the story and lead to less inclination to read more. "Oh he won...hmm, what's for dinner..."

Actually all you need to do is avoid obvious places like CYCLING FORUMS until after you get home and watch the days stage. It's not that hard to do.

See my post above re: other social media. I "hid" 12 different sources on FB for this month just to not get an inadvertent spoiler.

I did the same thing, and asked people to please not say who wins...

And I'm glad I'm not the only that believes the spoilers should be IN the threads, with a warning.

Nooooooooooooo.

On a serious note, I just learn to not come to bike forums or facebook before the end of the day. Sucks when bored, but people will always slip a spoiler, especially people that are new to the forums or haven't posted in a long time. Facebook is worse though with a lot of cycling friends and likes of cycling stuff, spoilers are like instant. No facebook before I watch the tour all month of july!

But common courtesy is just too darn inconvenient and some posters are just so pithy and relevant they have to show it off in their thread titles.

Years ago I used to think like the OP. Then I realized that if I don't want to know info about the biggest bike race in the world, don't go to a forum dedicated to bike racing. Its just not a realistic expectation. In today's age its difficult to not hear who won a stage without altering your pattern (staying away from media outlets, ESPN, etc.) I would throw in going to BF Professional Cycling for Fans board in that. Avoid the board if you really don't want to know. The moderators have enough time reeling in the fanboys and haters. Its the busiest time of the year for the board and you want people to post a certain way because you don't have time to watch the race live and want to wait until your leisure in the evening. Just not realistic.

Spoilers don't belong in thread titles. We try to catch them but sometimes they are missed. Please report them if you see them and it will be taken care of.

I completely disagree with you on all counts, but this post made me smile. Ironically hypocritical though!

Basically everybody has got three choices:

1- Don't go to BF if you're worried about spoilers.

2- Go to BF hoping there are no spoilers, but accepting the risk and not being bothered if their are.

3- Go to BF hoping there are no spoilers and becoming distraught if/when you do.

Regardless of what everybody else does, that is what you can control. One of those options causes me a lot more stress, so I tend to choose between the other two.

I do not see one thread in this forum with a spoiler in the title.
Oh wait.
Cav got splashed.
That ruined it for me.

Thanks! That was my goal! I guess the one thing that is missed is that BF is a font of knowledge, good and bad. Are we to expect that no one will have a question about whether to buy a BikesDirect bike or not in the entire month of July? There ARE reasons to come to a bike forum other than to compare spewings about the last stage in France.

Sorry - you have no right to tell us what we can and can't discuss. If you don't want to read it, stay away from a subforum in which the stated purpose is to discuss professional bike racing. As to all the other places you might encounter spoilers, that's not our problem.

Well said. Some folks watch the Tour stages live, then like to discuss them with like-minded individuals on a cycling forum. <gasp!>. Unbelievable, I know. But true. For those that want to watch later, don't expect the world to be put on hold til you're ready.

And, for the record, the OP complained about the Manx Missile thread being a spoiler. There was NO spoiler in the title, either in it's original form, or now with the spelling correction. I would put a link to the thread, but my phone refuses to cooperate. It's easy to find, regardless.

By my count, there are 49 sub forums on Bike Forums, many of which have their own further sub forums. It is reasonable for you to go to the other 48 and expect not to see spoilers. You can go ask as many questions as you want about the Dawes Lightning and not worry about spoilers. It is not reasonable, as MinnMan points out, to come to the one and only forum devoted to professional cycling and complain about the information there.

I'm not sure if this thread was moved to Professional from another Forum, but there definitely are guidelines about spoilers in thread titles here. If you see something, report it, and it will be dealt with.
