What is with all the spectators in the road?

Whenever I watch the TdF I always see loads of spectators far into the road getting right in the faces of the cyclists, sure they are cheering them, but isn't this an accident waiting to happen?

Accidents rarely happen with these types. It's usually someone taking a photo or not paying attention like the lady in yellow on stage 1.

The ones who obviously just want to get themselves on TV are the ones who really annoy me.

Bunch of excitables ain't they. Don't think i'd want it though. Every once in a while a spectator will over step the mark and i've seen riders lash out at them, and justifiably so.

It's not as if they can fence off the entire course. The crowds are part of the sport, which is one of the great things about cycling. Sometimes it goes wrong, but not very often.

Sure they can't fence off the whole course, but they could at least tell the spectators what is acceptable and then remove those who don't abide by the rules.

They (the police and officials) do tell the spectators not to impede the riders and by and large they (the spectators) don't. The police are the only ones legally entitled to remove anyone.

Some of the TV spectators as evidenced here come from a different cultural environment than the spectators on the road.

We can be thankful for that. Does the world really need to see more drunken dolts running down the road in their underwear?
