How long after the stage to get a valid test?

For awhile, I've understood that you had to get the samples within 20 minutes after the stage in order for it to be a valid sample. Yesterday, they gave Andy Schleck 2 1/2 HOURS to submit his sample.

What's the deal? Is that a valid sample? What would the test miss after that extra two hours of kidney filtering?

I just looked at the rules. Under the rules, Andy had to start the testing process within 30 minutes after the end of the podium ceremony or press conference, whichever is later.

2 1/2 hours. Wow. LONG press conference?

It's not likely that anything that would show up 20 minutes after the stage would be gone by 2.5 hours after the stage. For a while the rules (at track world cups at least) was that that chaperone would catch you as you came off the finish line, inform you that you had been selected for a sample, get your initials as acknowledgement, then start a clock. From that point you had an hour to report to anti-doping, and could do anything you needed to do, but couldn't leave the sight of the chaperone. Once you're at anti-doping you can't leave til you give a sample. At the track world cups that started leading to people missing medal ceremonies because they were too dehydrated to give a sample, even with some added fluids (I've heard stories of people being there pretty late, with the sink running and people trying all the camp tricks to get people to go). They changed the rules so that people wouldn't miss the medal ceremonies and other formalities of the event.
