The road to success for Cavendish

Quite a good read on the background and some history of Cavendish.

https://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/...the-world.html

Cavendish crashed in Madison training and got a track splinter through his penis. Fortunately, the doctor managed to pull it out cleanly and Cavendish took it home in his backpack.

Almost 100% of the pro peloton started racing at age 12 to 14. That doesnt surprise me at all tho. Yeah the kid is good, the head and the mouth are a problem tho.

The most interesting thing about the young Cavendish's career is that it illustrates the danger of just looking at the numbers. They almost excluded him from the British Cycling development programme because he couldn't generate the required numbers in the laboratory. But one of the coaches had the wit to point out that he kept on winning races against kids who, according to the figures, should be much stronger riders than him. There's more to bike racing than w/kg.

I remember seeing him win the points race for the Isle of Man on TV in the 2006[?] Commonwealth Games.

I thought it was pretty cool the the Isle of Man won a gold medal.
