Contador decision delayed another week

A decision in the long-running doping case of Alberto Contador has been delayed yet again, this time for another week, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said on Monday.

“(CAS) intends to publish its decision in the arbitration procedure involving the (UCI), (WADA), Alberto Contador and the Spanish cycling federation on Monday 6 February 2012,” CAS said in a statement posted Monday on its web site.

“A confirmation as to the date and time of the publication of the decision will be given by the CAS at the end of this week.”

Contador’s four-day arbitration hearing was held in late November, but CAS delayed a decision earlier this month, citing media speculation over alleged problems with the procedure of the case. All parties denied all allegations.

WADA lawyers threaten to protest Contador case

CAS had promised a decision this week, which opened the door for Contador to race the Tour de San Luis last week in Argentina, where he won two mountain stages, finished second overall to Levi Leipheimer and won the best climber’s jersey.

Contador told the Spanish daily MARCA he would not comment on his long-running clenbuterol case until a decision is released.

Contador faces up to a two-year ban and the loss of his 2010 Tour title if CAS rules against him. He could also lose results gained during the 2011 season as well as face a stiff fine.

If cleared, however, he can continue racing immediately.

Contador claims traces of clenbuterol entered his system after dining on contaminated beef brought to France from Spain. WADA pushed hard with its argument that the banned anabolic entered his system following an illegal blood transfusion.

The embarrassment and frustration is how this case was handled from day 1. It could go either way but I'm firmly in the "there is no grey area" camp. He had it in his system, should have been automatic 2-year suspension. But that didn't happen so everything that has followed is both tainted and political which can be synonyms. If he's found guilty then he will forever be lumped with the likes of Floyd Landis. Otherwise, lets just get on with the season.

If you look a the "body burden" of chemicals and toxins we all carry around, its harder to say there are no grey ares:

"Scientists estimate that everyone alive today carries within her or his body at least 700 contaminants, most of which have not been well studied (Onstot and others). This is true whether we live in a rural or isolated area, in the middle of a large city, or near an industrialized area" https://www.chemicalbodyburden.org/whatisbb.htm

If CAS ruling does go against Contador, what happens to the prize money? Half a million bucks that went in the Spaniard's pocket and those of his Astana teamates instead of Schleck's and Saxobank's. Does Contador have to pay back the whole amount? Will the 2010 Saxobank riders (most of whom now on Radioshack-Nissan) get paid the bonuses they were cheated out of? How is Riis going to handle this - hide face in shame at the disgrace of his star rider, or jump with joy that he finally, if retroactively, 'won' the 2010 Tour?

If they clear Contador, it's open season for Clenbutoral use - every damn rider in the pro peloton will be sure to eat "tainted beef".
