First Condemn the sin, then get out our checkbooks. Payable: Livestrong Foundation

This is tragic, but many of us saw it coming, even before allegations pointed to Armstrong several years ago.

Here's what I'm going to do, and I think we all should do the same.

I'm going to quietly lament the loss to cycling, I'm going to try not to blame Lance directly for the win-at-all-cost-cause-you're-paid-to mentality that professional cycling (and other sports) engenders, then,...

I'm going to write a check to the Livestrong Foundation, because I can separate good from bad, and at a time like this, the Livestrong Foundation is going to need support to continue all their good work– now, and in the years to come.

All of this sucks, but I won't throw away the good that's come out of LA's off-season efforts. I'll try not to judge. I've never ridden where he and others ride...

Livestrong's kind of a ****ty organization. Why not make a donation to a more worthwhile charity?

I have donated money to Livestrong in my late mother's name because it is a worthwhile charity. That does not mean I think LA did not dope. Two separate issues.

I'd rather write a check to the American Cancer Society or any number of other cancer charities.

Livestrong's focus is different than ACS and other cancer charities. Livestrong originally got involved in funding research, but not any more. Now they focus on the needs of people going through treatment and living with the consequences. That is an important, generally unmet need. I'm missing a good chunk of my colon as a result of cancer, and the day-to-day consequences are significant. I had the support of family and good insurance, so I didn't need much of what Livestrong does. But far too many Americans are lacking that kind of support. I think - no, I know - that what Livestrong does is valuable and unique work. I think we all should support them.

The OP is a 7 year member with 49 posts. You see alot of this when there's Armstrong news...

This has nothing to do with Livestrong and I'm offering no opinion on that, just noting a recurring phenomenon.

+1

It's your choice which organization(s) to donate to. But if you disapprove of LA's actions, and still want to support cancer research and patients, there are numerous charities out there.

but it's interesting that ACS stated that they still support LAF.
And yes they're two separate organizations with different goals.
I will continue to support both.

I've signed up for this year's LiveStrong ride. It's the first year where they haven't had a fund raising requirement...so I'm in for $50.

Will you please explain what it is that the Livestrong Foundation does.
I was under the impression that they just promoted "cancer awareness."
Admittedly, my impression is based largely what I have read on these boards
and what I have read here and there on online media sources.

Proving that Lance supporters don't post at work? I suppose my sub 500 posts in 7 years puts me in the same category?

Seriously, the only good from this situation is the Livestrong foundation. Lance, cycling, USADA, UCI, ASO, TDF, WADA etc, despite all their protestations are all complicit in the dirty "sport" of cycling. The sooner we stop thinking of it as "sport" and see it as the entertainment it is, the better.

Stop being defensive. Lance news brings people out of the woodwork both for and against. Nothing wrong with it but I do find it interesting though I'm not a real prolific poster myself.

Well put. As a two-time cancer survivor, I can honestly say that LIVESTRONG has helped me out quite a bit. And that is why I will continue to support their work regardless of the recent Lance Armstrong news. If someone would rather donate their time and money to a different charity, I think that's great too. It's always nice to be able to give back.

Walter's point was off topic. Which, he himself has complained about in other threads.
