La Belle Paris, city of lights. Serve them right if it rained. All this talk of night racing, sounds all very old school and retro to me. Are they going to have lights on their bikes.

Alpe de'Huez this year. They skipped it last year.

AND Mt. Ventoux. Both icons in one tour! I'm a little miffed at the route overall though. For some reason there are not profiles available for many stages, and it appears once again they are trying to force drama by holding off the major fireworks until the last third of the race. There are only 2 designated mountain stages in the first 14 stages, but 4 in the last 7 stages. Once again, this means day after day of mind-numbingly boring flat stages in the early part of the race. I don't mind a sprint stage now and again, but you can't have 3 or 4 consective days of relatively flat riding without being bored to tears. There do appear (from the profiles I did see) to be a few "interesting" stages with some bumps near the end, but nothing major to disrupt the overall race. The Giro and Vuelta were so much more exciting than the Tour, and I wish Le Grand Boucle would take some notes from these races...

Of course the clash of the titans in the mountains is the Tours headline act, but la grand boucle is not just about the battle for the overall, its also a chance for the little dogs to have their day. The likes of Louis Leon Sanchez, Thomas Voekler, Chevanel and the rest of the serial escapees need flatish stages to set up their wins and in my opinion they do provide a worthy hors d`ouvres for the main event.

It's the 100th TdF, so I guess they wanted it all in France. Stage 19 ends 25km (15 miles) from my house. Stage 20 starts and ends 30km (18 miles) from my house, and will be on a Saturday no less. I was going to boycott the TdF this year, but it's hard to resist when it's so close.

when and if they (UCI & the major race promoters) ever do get rid of rider/team radios, even the flatter races will, once again, become interesting and competitive...
as shown by the Olympics. Vino was bold and Marianne was indominable - worthy results.

initial thoughts after having seen the profiles of just a few of the stages:

really looking forward to the beauty of the corsican stages.

the romp thru the pyrenees on stage 9 is going to be a fun one to watch.

stage 19-the day/stage after the double ascent of alpe d'huez-looks like a potential trap for all the gc contenders at that point.
something tells me it could be more pivotal than the day before re: the gc leaderboard/time gaps.

glad to see a significant new climb ushering out the last mountain stage on the penultimate day.

Lets hope there are a few less crashes perhaps Christian Prudhommes idea of 8 man teams should be implemented.

That's true...the Olympic Road Race was actually very good, for being a circuit race. The race radios make every stage predictable...if there were no radios, it would make the race much more "natural" and not so scientifically predictable.

I disagree...race should be won on actual time, and I'm sure Chris Froome would agree!

Looks like Froome will get Sky leadership, so there will be no lugging Wiggo up the hills anymore. Everyone should be free to fly and with AC and AS in the race, it will almost assuredly be more exciting.

I thought last year's TDF had too much ITT, now I think this year's has too little. lol
I do think this route promises to help produce more excitement than last year's.
