Truckfull of Garmin-Sharp road bikes stolen at Tour de Med - 16 bikes...

    http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/garm...at-tour-de-med

'Stolen bikes. 16 brand new di2 equiped cervelo R5. Still with race numbers'

They won't be in the final two stages of the race.

Is this the right place to put this thread or is this the forums just for Lance Armstrong, drugs, and trek discussion?

wow that is incredible. It is hard to imagine that the teams do not have better security given the value that is in on their trucks. What a terrible way to end an event.

Man, I wouldn't want one of those. What if was Farrar's? He crashes on like every stage.

Here is a more in-depth article.
    http://velonews.competitor.com/2013/...f-bikes_274377

I find it an interesting story for a few reasons,

    1 Its my home town.
2 the scale of the robbery, its not just one guy grabbing a bike or two it appears to be very organised. Will they make profit on the booty? Will they get caught?
3 Its really going to hurt the race, la tour med, stage 3 didn't even run and then this... The larger teams may stay away next year, and they will struggle to get the police to close the roads.

Wow, that makes this Pez article from mid-January rather ironic, check out paragraph 5, right under the picture of the truck full of bikes:

    http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullstory&id=11118

The trucks were all loaded up with spare bikes and the Cervélo P5 time trial bikes, that truck must have a good lock on the door. The riders had been mixing their riding between the road and TT bikes but most days the training was made up of just hours on the bike under the belt.

Those frames sure will be thrown away but the wheels, di2 groups and other stuff will be sold pretty quick.

They must have planned where to sell the parts before they stole the bikes, as anyone offered di2 parts in the next few months will be suspicious. They could store them for a year, or travel them far away but 60 set's of wheels is going to be hard work to sell unless they had a buyer set up from the start.

Bad luck to anyone trying to see your di2 parts near here in the next 6 months.

Shame they put all this effort into a race, yet the video coverage of the race is so slim

I would agree that this looks not random but thought out. at 10k per bike (just a guess) that is a significant haul. 16 bikes could not be easy to move from point A to point B. My guess is that they are already out of country and will marketed outside of France

While I wish I could lament about lack of coverage in France for races your coverage is far superior to what we get here in the US. I had to follow the Giro on the internet because of lack of coverage in my area. Le Tour and Vuelta were both covered but arguably last years finest Gran Tour was not

It would be nice if all the teams could get together and give their spares so Garmain can still finish the race. . It sounds well organized enough, like they staked out the teams and probably chose the team with the most predictable pattern and loosest security.

    Sad.

According to Slipstreams' statement ( http://www.slipstreamsports.com/2013...quipment-theft ) some of the other teams made offers of help along with sponsors and local authorities but they weren't able to put together enough kit to make the race workable. I guess everyone just pitches in together when things like this happen as it could easily be one team or another at any given time.

    Such a low act.

Man, that's good to hear. It's nice to know there's still humanity in this world.
