Tour de France - Stage 4, Tue Jul 2, Nice (TTT), 25km

Good morning all. Time to shake up the GC a little bit. We're back on the mainland in Nice. The course is flat as a pancake, and there's only a few corners, so it's all about raw power. Expect the weaker teams like Saur Sojasun, Euskaltel, etc. to lose buckets of time.

Ye all know the big contenders here.

Garmin out and out favourites. Sky and OPQS will be hampered by injuries to their key time trialists, Geraint Thomas and Tony Martin respectively. BMC and Saxo Tinkoff should be there or thereabouts as well. Movistar a very outside bet.

Big news for any fellow Irish fans out there, if Saxo Tinkoff slightly upset the odds, Nico Roche will pull on the yellow jersey. If overwhelming favourites Garmin win, then it will be Brit David Millar.

(Bold indicates leading time)

Start times (All CET!):

Should be a good one.

Personally, I haven't watched a team TT in quite sometime.

I have to like an American 1-2 finish here, Garmin, BMC and yes, Millar will be wearing yellow!

But the real interest will be watching how Gerrant Thomas performs. He's got to be dreading this stage...

Some people are giving out that it's so short, but personally I'm happy with this format. 80km TTT is too dull for me.

I suspect GT will just do a long turn on the front for Sky at first and then abandon, although I read some interview with him where he said he's feeling better all the time. Probably something to do with the mammoth supply of painkillers he was fed during the stage yesterday. For his sake I hope he abandons today though, it can't end well if he pushes himself much longer.

A lot more fun to do than to watch for sure. Gambling makes TTTs a bit more interesting for me. Small money on Saxo, Radioshack, and Belkin. Bigger money on Garmin. Not sure if that's legal in your state!

Argos Shimano are down the ramp!

Ok, here come OPQS. Tony Martin and Cav not 100%, so watch them closely. Could go very very well or not well at all.

American Edward King of Cannondale doesn't seem to be fully involved in this TTT, riding a normal road bike with attachments and couldn't keep up with their paceline from the very start.

My darkhorses Belkin in at 26.33. Far better than what their odds suggested, but not quite good enough.

Wow, Orica is having a great 48 hrs., aren't they? Gerrant Thomas is living the dream right now for sure, first beating Sagan and now in the yellow. Never saw that one coming to be honest.

A bit disappointed in both BMC and Garmin, although thankfully they didn't lose to much time here. I guess a close look at Garmin and I should have seen they are a team of climbers this time around.

I think the biggest name in trouble after this stage would be Schleck, who was looking strong, but is now over a minute out...

May not impress some people but DANG! 25 KM in under 26 minutes, that's an average of almost 35 MPH on that flat course. Crazy speeds!

Geraint Thomas isn't in yellow, Simon Gerrans is.

Contador did not get it that bad considering that evans, rodriguez and valverde now are forced to attack where ever they can to get that time back. IMO evans is toasted, rodriguez and valverde have a lot of heart so who knows what they pull up, contador needs to just wait and see what happens.

That's darn fast but consider that is just the average, some place sure they got to 70 km/h and in others as low as 45 hm/h. Consider that they even used aero underwear too you know... But either way

Anybody remembers Christian Vande Velde like 3 or 4 years ago in the ITT? he was clicking like 85 km/h in some of the almost non downhills/flats of that course...
