That's just f****d up. I'm not sure what they could do to prevent stuff like that from happening other than a well deserved a** kicking. I don't know who would have the time to administer that other than bystanding spectators.

it's a soft target. they're lucky worse doesn't happen. frankly I think those helicopters get way to close. one rouge gust and it can be a big problem.

As rumrunn said, I'm actually surprised that worse things don't happen.
I mean what other sport can you really get that close to the players? And I have to think that alot of these fans are pretty tuned-up by the time the riders go by, and there is nothing worse than a drunken fan. Anything goes for them...

I don't condone spectators throwing stuff at riders. Having said that, Cavendish threw a shoulder into Vermeer and should have been sanctioned, in my view.

UCI jury president Vicente Tortajada told Belgian journalists there was no talk of a penalty for the Manxman. “At no time was there a question of relegation or disqualification,” said Tortajada. “We reviewed the sprint many times. Veelers was finishing his work and he pulled off. If it was someone’s fault, it was not Cavendish’s.”

I just watched it again, because I couldn't believe this assessment, and sure enough, Cav shoves his elbow out at Veelers, just like it looked from behind. The overhead shot shows that not only did he shove his elbow out, but he veered straight left in his path when he did it too.
The camera work at the tour can lead you to false conclusions. How many times do you look down the finishing meters and wonder whether so and so is going to get caught from behind, only to see from another angle that so and so's chasers are actually bike lengths behind. You have to use multiple angles to piece together the three dimensional relationships. Look at all the video of the Cavendish-Veelers collision and it looks a lot less like the deliberate take down that many are claiming. I see what the commissaires claim to see; it was an accident and if anything, Veelers contributed to the accident slightly more than Cavendish.
Not everyone was throwing blame at Cavendish, however. Robbie McEwen, a former green jersey winner on three occasions and current advisor to Orica-GreenEdge, wrote, “What happened with @MarkCavendish & Veelers was an accident. Cav sprinting & Veelers looking down drifted right. Looks like Tom is ok #tough.” Cavendish’s Dutch teammate, Niki Terpstra, pointed to the late turn toward the finish in Saint Malo: “@letour wanted some spectacle when they decited [sic] to put the finish in a corner with smooth cobblestones.well,they got it!what if it rained?”

Personally, I think Mark should have stopped and beat the daylights out of the guy. People just think they have carte blanche to just behave like animals but they don't and should be disciplined.

Well, looks like his old lady smartened him up between stages again and he's since had some nice things to say about Kittel and showed some concern for Veelers. You ever notice how they talk about his daughter right around the time he pulls some immaturity? Seems to happen every tour. Anyway, he's still just slightly more likeable than Wiggins or Lance at this point.

I forget the specific details, but a few years ago, a top cyclocross rider got off his bike and went after a spectator who had been throwing beer at him during a race. And during last year's Tour, Gilbert confronted some spectators as well.
