Has any pro rider in TDF with Mt bike on course

For some reason i thought i once saw footage from a tour de france or another european stage race of one rider doing the race on a mt bike? has this ever been done?

Any TdF rider on a MTB could probably stay with a pack of amateurs on road bikes. But wetween riders of the same level, no way.

You probably saw some spectator on the course which happens sometimes. Either that or one of the tourist rides that the Tour organizes to give a taste of the course to the spectators.

Quite a few riders in the tour used to be MTB racers.

But if you put Froome, Contador, Merckx, Anquetil, Hinault or whomever in their prime on a modern mountain bike, they would be crushing it to stay with the gruppetto. The efficiency difference at that level is very wide.
