Someone throw GVA a garter belt!
I'm starting to get a little heartbroken watching Greg Van Avermat not win bike races.
He has good team support, this year anyway.
He is aggressive, doesn't do a Hamlet as the winning move rides away.
He has beaucoup legs at the end of long hard races.
He finishes on the podium, more than anyone.
He never gets to stand on the top step, almost never anyway.
What, if you were GVA's trainer, would you have him do?
I almost think he should do a whole bunch of after-250-km-sprint-training. Like Cancellara did. It feels like, so many times, he loses because he doesn't have that last turn of speed in the last 200 m.
In an interview I read, he ackowledged his need for a better sprint, and said he has been training for that, but - I speculate - maybe not hard enough or well enough?. Or am I all wrong, sprint speed is innate so no amount of training will improve his sprint significantly against the likes of Stybar?

Problem is, there are a bunch of other guys who want to win as badly as he does.
I don't think he's doing anything wrong, it's just hard.
Not a very technical analysis, obviously, but that's bike racing.
There is an article in Pro Cycling magazine, March 2015, about him.

I wouldn't have a lot of sympathy for Greg after Amstel. BMC threw all their eggs in the Gilbert basket, even though they had 2 other riders (GVA and Hermanns) who looked strong enough to win. The daft part was seeing Van Avermaet and Hermans, both off the front with less than 4km to go, refusing to work with Fuglsang and Minard.
Oh, and there's also this; https://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/...hearing-166917

Bad enough to "enhance" one's performance and win, but really, really bad to enhance one's performance and come in second every race!

GVA acquitted of charges. I'm pleased.
