Who is Nairo Quintana?
You know about Quintana's daily 8% climb to school as a child. Cycling Inquisition has a nice write up on more of this back story from this year's Tour.
As Nairo Quintana won the last mountain stage in this year's Tour de France, he earned the polka dot jersey, secured the white jersey, and managed a second place in the GC. In doing so, he had the best showing of any Colombian at the Tour. Ever. No small feat at 23 years of age, and during his first Tour. And on Colombian independence day, no less.
Now that Quintana has become the focus for many who follow the sport, we should take a closer look at who Quintana is, and how he came up through the sport. This is significant, since his life has been an interesting one that manages to shed a light on many other Colombians who, like him, have dedicated their lives to this sport....
Quintana's parents watch stage 20 in their native town of Combita.

Fascinating video interview with Matt Rendell in there. At one time I thought that Fabio Parra might be a great all round threat in the Grand Tours, very early in his career, but he didn't quite match the promise that Quintana shows despite a 3rd place GC in the '88 TDF.
Also a good interview with Andy Hampsten about the older generation of Colombians in there also.
And it looks like it was Todd Gogulski that was in on accusing Quintana of doping at the Tour of the Basque Country. "Out of Nowhere" they uttered.
Great post !

I know who i will be rooting for the next few years. This kid just compels you to pull for him. A wonderful refreshing change from some of the arrogant self serving elite cyclists, with the exception of Sagan of course, that guy just cracks me up.

He'll have to improve his time trials (I think he lost 3 minutes to Froome on the 1st ITT) or he'll be like Andy Schleck. A wonderful story though and glad to see Colombia cycling back in the tour at a high level. Hopefully he'll be in the tour next year but wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't focus on the Giro and Vuelta next year. Quintana and Kittel, the two breakout stars this year.

The TdF organizers will want to keep that in mind. They will have a lot of control over how NQ does based on the ITT route. Froome is going to do well with any route, but NQ needs the climbs.

OP, thanks for the link to a very interesting read.
Nice to have great new talent come up, and especially from a region which has such history, as underrated as it has been.
Can only hope that time proves Nairo to be everything the current picture paints of him.
Cycling is not about a single rider, cycling is about all those who compete to excel; and nairo is adding to that honorable path.
looking forward to more excitment this season, witha bunch of big challenges ahead. I don;t think he's done for the season...

Well, it looks like he's in a contract dispute with Movistar, who is keeping him out of the post-Tour crits....

He's a talented young man with a huge dose of the arrogance of youth. Let's hope he establishes himself before the cynicism of 'professionalism' forces a change. If nothing else, he's good value and we'll probably be enjoying him for some years to come
