When friends fall out: Kimmage v Walsh

The two journalists most identified with the campaign against doping in cycling David Walsh and Paul Kimmage seem to have fallen out with each other following Walsh's recent article in support of Froome and Team Sky in the Sunday Times.

IRISH JOURNALIST Paul Kimmage says he’s had ‘several fraught conversations’ with David Walsh about the Sunday Times writer’s defence of Team Sky and its Tour de France winner, Chris Froome.

Walsh — who has enjoyed access to Dave Brailsford’s operation in recent weeks — argued that ‘the mob’ are wrong about Chris Froome, the same way they were wrong about Lance Armstrong.

“The question I would ask David is ‘who are the mob?’” Kimmage, a former colleague of Walsh’s says on this week’s Second Captains podcast.

“Maybe they’re fans who genuinely believed in Armstrong but were betrayed and they’re not going to have their tummies tickled again. And does the mob include people like myself? Does it include physiologists? Does it include doctors? Does it include all the people who have genuine reservations about performance.

“So I was a bit surprised about the generalisations and I found it insulting in some ways, I’ve got to be honest.”

He continued: “Have I spoken to him? We’ve had several fraught conversations about this, this year. [H]e had an opinion on this four months ago and that opinion hasn’t changed. And he’s entitled to that opinion.”

David Walsh is a hypocrite and fraud. It is ridiculously clear to almost everyone that Froome is robo-doped, but yet Walsh goes out of his way to kiss the azzes of Team Sky and Froome. Guess the pocketbook comes before his integrity. It's one thing to have a wait-and-see attitude toward Froome, but to engage in almost perverted azz-kissing is disingenuous. Kimmage is still asking the questions, but he is not going over the top either way. At least Kimmage is showing to be consistent. Walsh is a "little troll" after all. Meh, eventually Froome will be exposed, and Walsh will lose all credibility. It all works out.

Walsh was inside the Sky camp for the whole Tour, and seems to have not seen anything untoward. If he didn't see anything, then it's harsh to call him a hypocrite for not reporting on seeing anything. If Froome did get exposed, the loss of credibility would be fatal to Walsh's career, so it's something he'd want to be careful about.

Kimmage is being consistent, and it's good to have someone leading the charge to increase transparency in the peloton. I just hope he doesn't overreach and make a fool of himself. I think he has left himself enough room that if/when Brailsford and co finally do release all the data, and if it does prove Froome has been clean all along, he can say "See? All I wanted was that data. Was that so hard?" If Kimmage overdoes it, then even if Froome is robo-doped, it's going to make it harder to expose.

Dopers gain credibility by drawing in reputable journalists to defend them so that the argument does not seem so lopsided.

There was a lot more going on with Armstrong than there is with SKY just yet. You have two very fast climbs in the TDF but Froome has always been a climber and is built like a climber. You have an outed doctor who was fired by Sky as soon as he was found out. What you don't have is even one person witnessing any evidence of doping yet.

That's really not enough for an assumption yet.

Team Sky is connected to The Sunday Times newspaper as the Rupert Murdoch company that owns the ST also owns 50% of BSkyB broadcasting.

During the blog mentioned in the OP Kimmage claimed the ST refused to print a story of his critical of Team Sky.

Kimmage was employed by the Sunday Times between 2002 and2012.

In 2012 Kimmage was laid off from the Sunday Times[7] He has claimed that the loss of his job is related to his reporting on doping in cycling. Because many of his doping and cycling stories were rejected by the paper's lawyers, he was unable to get as many published articles as he otherwise would have, and this led to his losing his job.[8]

Kimmage also claims Bailsford reneged on a commitment to allow him access to the team during the 2012 Tour.
