I think what their case is about is that he claims they knew about it. And I believe the suit is for up to $120 million. Don't know whether they did or not. 7-11 didn't know what a velodrome was before they signed on to build two of them when they sponsored the 7-11 team in the earl '80s. They also were eager enough to sponsor that team simply on the basis of Olympic speed skating star Eric Heiden's being on the team despite his having little experience as a cyclist at the time.

It worked out well for 7-11. Not so much for USPS. I mean if they didn't know about it it doesn't bode well for the intelligence of these particular athletes for using a US government agency as cover for a doping program....Nor for the intelligence of that government agency either.

Personally I suspect they were probably somewhat aware but he'll have a hard time proving it. I notice that Trek isn't suing him, lol.

The one he has left must be made of solid brass, and be so large it's a miracle he was able to haul it over the mountains without the use of a Radio Flyer wagon behind his bike.

Somethings never change. For what he did to those who told the truth, I hope the only bike he see's is a pedicab at a weight watchers convention.

This should be good. An armed robber can claim that it is the convenience store clerk's fault for giving him the money in the register since she believed that his gun had bullets in it and her life was in danger. A murderer can claim that it is the victim's fault for not knowing that the bullet from his gun would kill her.

USPS spent the money, being fully aware of the risks, yet got a return on their investment, now they are trying to argue that they are entitled to a lottery pay out, end of story.

Agreed. I'm no Armstrong fan, but the benefits USPS gained from Lance's false claims likely far outweigh the damages, especially more than 8 years after they dropped their sponsorship!

The government must have a case or they would not have turned down these offers:

120 million (The last figure I heard they're suing for) minus 5 million leaves quite a bit of bartering room. And yeah they want him to turn over everybody and he probably won't just because. So this is the way to pressure him to do so. Interesting that the Feds dropped their case during an election year and now will pick up a civil suit now that USADA did their work for them.

It's incredible when you think about it that they wouldn't know, to some degree, what they were getting into. Obviously they weren't watching much of the sport they were sponsoring or the changes that the team made when they got rid of Andy Hampsten and their original team doctor. According to Tyler Hamilton's book the team threatened the doctor with a lawsuit if he went public with his suspicions that the team was embarking on a doping program.

It's like the NSA contracting out National security duties to god only knows who and not having a clue about them.

I've never figured how the USPS makes money off of pro cycling myself. I've never used the USPS in lieu of Fed Ex or UPS because they sponsor a cycling team. I've always used them when they're cheaper and I'm not in a hurry for something. I've always thought it strange that a US government agency gets involved in sponsoring sporting events. Especially one that's been suspected of PED abuse along with sports they're always wasting time and money with congressional hearings about.

The US government has no interest in saving the tax payers the cost of litigation. By some estimates they spent nearly 100 million dollars going after Barry Bonds, resulting in a sentence of community service.

This the same USPS that lost $1.9 billion last quarter alone.

On the one hand I guess they could use every $100 million they can find.

But on the other, isn't it just time to call it?

Utter nonsense. It's an agency of the executive branch, with the majority of the Board nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The reason USPS is in dire financial condition is the PAEA (signed by Bush in 2006) requires them to spend $5B+ a year pre-funding their retiree costs, which no other agency or business is required to do. In other words, Congress is trying to squeeze the USPS into submission, and you can guess what is behind that.

I have no connections to the PS whatsoever, but I think it's sad that this American institution, around since 1775 - Ben Franklin the first Postmaster - is in the cross hairs of certain politicians and lobbyists.

If they'd put any resulting settlement money into paying the political parties bills instead of their own bills they'd probably get better results from the system.

If you have any doubts about what Armstrong is you need to read "It's Not About the Lab Rats" Outside magazine February 2012.

It's funny that Lance is so hated that people even side with the USPS against him. The USPS is not known for good decision making and sort of sets the standard for how not to operate a company efficiently. The USPS is even associated with mass shooting sprees where multiple people die.....You know, "going postal". But the USPS still wins out over Lance...LOL
