Mont Ventoux

I'm sure this query has been answered before, but I was wondering if anybody knows what low gears Chris Froome used on Mont Ventoux in the Tour. The way he was spinning was phenomenol on such a tough climb.

I have no confirmation on this, but I read on a different forum that he used 38x28 and Quintana had 39x28.

During the TV broadcast in France, the commentators said Quintana was riding 39x29 on the Ventoux.

Just to expand the subject, what low gears do the guys in the grupetto use?
Being much bigger, heavier guys than the climbers one may assume that they use lower gears to haul themselves up those climbs but maybe not---I don't know.
