Tour down under 2014 thoughts and predictions

Finally!
Surprised that nothing has been mentioned yet? Porte,Evans and Gerrans looked strong at worlds. I think Gerrans has a good chance of winning this one, I just don't think the race favors Porte.
I have a liking to Gerrans especially since we broke our hip around the same time so I'll be pulling for him!
Who will come on top between kittel and griepel? I would like to see another dominate year for kittel.
I would also like to see how renshaw does. Big year for him and cav
Will you guys be watching on steephilltv?

Here in Adelaide enjoying the race!! Gerrans looks strong, I am however dissapointed Tommy Voeckler didnt make a start due to a training crash. I think he would have done ok here.

Kittel!!

Love that guy, even with his silly hair.

I'm watching the highlights on WIN from down here in Tasmania. :)

That Kittel is gonna be (or already) something! I once saw him chase down and drop Cavendish at last year's Le Tour. Very very impressive!

After this past year's Tour, I'm sure he's quite visible as a sprint contender now. I like him as an athlete and everything that he stands for.

Cadel's attack on the Corkscrew was fantastic stuff. Television doesn't even start to do that bit of road justice and you're climbing quite strongly as soon as you turn off Gorge Rd. The road surface is one of those really rough jobs that feel like your brakes are dragging. When Gerrans, Porte and Evans went out, I was impressed but then Cadel just took off. The downhill section once they came over the top isn't fun either - very technical, very steep, very fast. Real heart in the mouth stuff. He's certainly here for the win. I notice Cadel hasn't moderated his post race handling of reporters either though to be fair, it looked like he was still on the climb.

Woo hoo, Cadel Evans and Simon Gerrans sprinting for time bonuses on the intermediate sprints. Who predicted that. Evans now changing bikes.

If you haven't seen it else where here, some vintage Evans. It'll be Evans or Gerrans for the overall.
The only other rider to get the crowd worked up as much was the rider pulling a mono the last 100 metres over corkscrew!

I like Kittel as well but man where has he been in this race? dropped on the latest stage really. Granted he probably doesn't want to be in great form yet.

Jealous! It is hard to keep up with this tour in the states

Probably my favorite bit so far as well as gerrans outsprinting griepel. It is pretty amazing too how Evans did it and I like the quote from Wulf " ...the peleton knew exactly what Cadel had planned and we still couldn't stop him..." -awesome

The coverage here hasn't been brilliant. SBS used to cover it, and I'm pretty sure we saw all/most of it. But now WIN has taken it over, and we get 1 hour late in the evening.

I do hope SBS has the TDF!!

Rad shot!!

Seems like Cadel had a rough day yesterday, almost crashing out a few times. He's looking strong though!

We have better coverage in Canada. Sportsnet has a half hour highlights show followed by the last two hours of the race. Backwards if you ask me, since I sometimes watch the entire highlight show and don't need to bother watching the 2-hour show. Other days I watch the first half of the highlights then watch the 2-hour show.

Today they screwed up the 2-hour show and had the ending first. When I realized that I fast-forwarded towards the end to watch in sequence.

Something crazy happened here today on NBCSHD. Watched the first 4 stages on replay but no show today. 11:00 tonight they will show Stage 6 and then 2;00 am they will show stage 5. Yep that's right, 6 then 5 later.

tourer78 01-27-14 04:33 AM

Nothing too spectacular, but here are some photos from stage 1 & 6 of the race. Enjoy!!

Maybe they though it would be more exciting if the whole tour had a mountain top finish.

markjenn 01-27-14 11:52 PM

Thought the race was very good and coverage by NBCSports (with Phil and Paul) was, as always, excellent.

I'm struck by how much having finish time bonuses added to the uncertainty and encouraged attacking. (Might even have had a couple intermediate sprint time bonuses.) Makes attacks much more worth the risk. I know they've fallen out of favor with the TDF, but I say "bring 'em back". Anything that keeps these things from becoming so processional.
