Were there less crowds on the mountain tops?

It seemed to me there were less crowds on the mountain tops or were there just more barricades? In the past I've always been nervous watching the guys go through tunnels of people but this year it didn't seem as bad.

It might seem that way compared to last year with the Alpe d'Huez and Mont Ventoux finishes.

Lots of crowds in Yorkshire and on the Tourmalet. That said, the numbers were probably down this year with Froome/Contador missing for most of the Tour.

It seems to me that each year there are a few more miles with barricades than the year before.

Also it seems like the placement may be getting better, that it is not just blindly done fro mountain tops and finishes, but that they spend a bit more time deciding just where the crowds might be a problem.

Yes I actually noticed that too. There were barricades in the middle of rides where it could have been congested without them.

Thinking about it the glorified hills in England were packed.

It might be a fair number of people decided that the actual mountain tops would be a zoo and decided to view elsewhere.

I noticed several key spots on the docents that had significant crowds.
