Merckx. And Merckx and Merckx and Merckx. Incomparable.
Of the rest, Coppi was before my time but must have been extraordinary. Hinault was as tough a rider as I ever hope to see. Kelly not far behind.

Neither, but my error. It's actually Stephen Roche. Tour winner.
If you want to read the article...
Half of Tour de France winners say Lance Armstrong should get his seven titles back | road.cc
I agree with them and Roche.

Having actually seen this, even at the lower levels of cycling (where everybody thinks they can win the Tour), to think that not everyone was doing something to keep up is naïve and comical. To make an example of one person is ridiculous.
If people think Merckx did not get help winning all those races...even more humorous. 1969 (reactivin, booted from Giro), 1973 (booted from the Giro di Lombardi)...etc.
Jacques Anquetil:
"Leave me in peace; everybody takes dope."
For real fun, read how he handled his win at Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 1966 and his fight with the Belgians over a drug test.

The article was about lifting the ban on Armstrong so he could participate in triathlons (and other events), written in a triathlon magazine. To prove the writer's point, he referenced several former Tour winners who said he should have his titles back. I could have made it more specific, but to me if you lift the ban then getting the seven titles back follows. Bottom line, there are a good number of former Tour winners who are saying that he should get his titles back.

There's a podcast of it here: RTÉ - Today with Sean O'Rourke Scroll down to 'The Comeback Kid - Lance Armstrong' on the 25th March.

Stephen Roche was on Irish Radio yesterday talking about Armstrong's participation in a charity (Leukaemia) TdF cycle & his attitude to him in general.

No one can see into another's soul but he did apologize and I understand he talked to the most damaged parties. It's not like he wants to come back and do the tour again. But it's kind of nuts that he can't even do a charity ride.
There is no right or wrong answer here. From my perspective, he's done about as much as anyone could so let him show everyone he either did or didn't mean it and the only way to do that is to allow him to do some rides.
That's primarily what the Lava article was about; letting him do triathlons.
Thanks for making that available to listen to.

Others in his camp, Zoetemelk, Gimondi, Janssen....all assiduous dopers? All mentioned in the article.

I agree there's an element of hypocrisy involved in the ostracisation of Armstrong. But he brought a lot of it on himself by his behaviour - the bullying, the threats, the faux self-righteousness. I don't care if he rides in triathlons or not, but if taking a hard line with him signals a zero tolerance approach for doping in the future, that would be a good thing. Unfortunately it probably doesn't, and now that middle-aged businessmen are loading themselves up with epo and HGH to win Cat3 races, the goose of clean cycling is pretty definitively cooked.

To get this thread on track again...
Tyler Farrar, who I believe is the greatest sprinter America has ever produced.
Thomas Voeckler, yeah, I know his style can be annoying, but it is fun to watch, it's unique and he loves to go for the break.
Jens Voight, another guy who goes hard for the break and has a big engine. The sport will miss him.
Fabian Cancellara, a pleasure to watch on a bike. Perfect form and can go hard for miles.
Marcel Kittel, the most intimidating rider in the peloton. Big, strong and can he sprint! Will go down as one of the greatest sprinters ever.
Would have loved to see Coppi and Bartoli go at it, but before my time...

Agreed.
I like Sagan, but enough already, win something.
Sometimes I don't think he takes his career seriously. Who are you, a sprinter, a big engine guy, a classics rider, GC threat, what? I'm just not sure...

So many greats, current & past. I always like a utility guy like Hincape. In his own right, could have won more races, if he wasn't part of the "help".

I have a thing for nutter-a$$ sprinters, so I'll go with Tom Steels and Robbie McEwen. Also was a fan of "Abdu" Djamolidine Abdoujaparov, a guy who every time I have to spell it, I have to look it up, LOL! The guy who was Cav before there was a Cav.
Current guys, I'd have to go with Andrew Talansky, he's just such a refreshing personality. And he seems the most clean"ish" of many of the riders going today.

A lot of underdogs in my picks.
Past:
USA's: George Mount, Mark Pringle, Alexi Grewal, Andy Hampsten & Jeff Pierce
Colombia's: Fabio Parra & Luis Herrera and Mexico's Raul Alcala
France's Bernard Hinault almost always made some drama in a race
Active:
Cannondale-Garmin's Andrew Talansky
Giant-Alpecin's: Chad Haga and Lawson Craddock
Tinkoff-Saxo's: Alberto Contador
