Is a recall really necessary? It seems like common sense to make sure the quick release isn't going to interfere with the disc and to check the security of the quick release occasionally. It's like prop stops on airplanes with the big red "remove before flight" flags.. Duh

I'm not surprised that it has expanded beyond Trek.

As far as "necessary"... probably not. There was an earlier discussion about simply mounting the QR on the right.

I did some testing earlier, and found 2 skewers that could enter a disc. I think one was closed, one was open. But most of my skewers didn't. I have a skewer on a Burly trailer that uses an outside dished wheel, and the skewer (original?) comes mighty close to the spokes.



Anyway, my guess is that this is one of the recalls that will MAKE MONEY. At least for the bike shops, but perhaps even Trek and Bontrager, and other bike companies. I'm not sure why Trek included a $20 coupon. But, what does a skewer cost? Maybe $5? And it is an excellent way to bring customers in to the stores. I wonder how many of those customers bought $50 worth of supplies? Tires, Tubes, Tape, Lights, Service, etc.

Perhaps manufacturers and LBS's should be required to attach big red "check adjustment IAW attached instructions before riding" flags to all quick release mechanisms mounted on bicycles sold to the general public. A general public that has clearly demonstrated that the QR mechanisms are NOT necessarily simple to use/adjust for the uninitiated in cycling technique/maintenance, let alone NOT designed as idiot proof safety devices.

I have one bike with disc brakes A bikesdirect s/s fat tire bike Which I put together myself . I knew nothing of this recall. I cut the zip ties holding the front wheel. looked the wheel over and switched the skewer to lever on the right, only Common sense to me to put the lever opposite of the disc
