I just put a set of 25c Gatorskins on my spare CX wheelset and plan to ride my CX bike on the road this winter. I haven't actually ridden it yet on the road with the road tires - I just got the bike a month ago - a Focus Mares. For long slow winter rides, I don't think the difference in geometry will matter much. I put a Stages on this bike which has been the main reason why I haven't ridden my previous CX bike on the road more.

I have a set of Compass 32s on my Double Cross. Lovely tires. When they wear out I'll switch to the 38s.

I have a set of road wheels for my All-City Macho, Macho Man. It really doesn't look much different from the cross wheels though

The geometry on my Ritchey Breakaway Cross is very much like classic road geometry. Since it's my travel bike, I keep some spare road rubber for it when I'm taking it to road events.
This past month I posted my fastest ever century time at the HH100 on my steel Ritchey Cross, with slick tires on it. 5:10 chip time, sub 5 rolling time.
So slicks on a CX bike? Yeah.

I'm running 700 x 32 continental gatorskin folding tires on my soma double-cross; they weigh 325 grams and handle nicely.

700x32 Vittoria Voyager Hyper on the Carbon CX Bike
700x40 Vittoria Voyager Hyper on the Origin8 CX bike
700x27 Challenge Parigi Roubaix on the Simoncini CX
700x32 Compass Stampede Pass on my Peugeot PX10
I have knobby tires for technical trails or wet conditions, but I rarely use them. Slicks are always faster on dry surfaces, if good bike handling skills are used.

Unless we're talking something bigger than 35mm, people running road tires on gravel here in Central PA better know how to fix a flat. Or two. Or three. And have good bug repellent on

I had a Moots Psychlo-x that was my main bike that I ran some 700x32 Compass Bike tires on it and it rode great. I think it was just as fast and the Specialized Roubaix I have now.

I just purchased the Mares AX 105 today. I was just wondering what your thoughts on your Mares are. I haven't gotten to ride on it yet (just a test ride). And as the cash has been laid down, it won't change my decision, I'm just looking for another persons opinion. This is my first cross bike and I've never owned a road bike.

I swap wheels from bike to bike on a regular basis and run either 25, 28 or 30mm road tires on my cross bike all the time.

I run 700x28 gatorskins on my cyclocross bike. I use them for my 22 mile commute everyday. They have worked great for the past 4000 miles. I also use them when I ride gravel paths with the misses although it is a bit slower then.

Have my Salsa Warbird set up with Compass Bon Jon Pass 35s set up tubeless.
The ride is so nice, just a great tire. Can't wait to get the Barlow Pass mounted up on my touring bike!

I want to put road tires on my cx bike, specifically continental gatorskins. My rims are 622. As I'm new to this style of bike and these wheel sizes, I assume this means their 700's will not work. Please advise.

Sheldon Brown has a chart. It doesn't make sense, but it can be learned.
I only have two wheelsets and both are tubular. A lot of the time I've got the wonderful and cheap Yellow Jersey 3 for $50 sewups on one set of wheels.

The differences are measured in a couple of degrees and centimeters, but there are differences. The Ritchey Cross has some good old-school road geometry. Keep in mind that before CX became a thing, cyclists would just put bigger tires on their road bikes and train off-road.

Soma Double Cross with Conti Gatorskin
Seems like Conti Gatorskin is the popular choice for many here. So is mine. Been running the Contis since the first time I rode a hybrid (Felt QX75), and now the Soma Double Cross. It's been the choice of tyres since almost all of my ride here in Singapore are on the tarmac. I chose the Double Cross for its versatility (only one bike allowed for now ^^).

I run 28mm Panaracer Pacelas on my Macho Man. I have another wheelset with 35mm Maxxix Raze for racing or riding off road. I know there are differences between a Cross bike geo and a dedicated road bike (mostly dealing with the ability to take hard, technical turns) but it's fine for my purposes. In fact - I prefer the Cross bike fit and ride quality over many road bikes.

I'll be running what are evidently called "City Trekking" tires.. so they're not road and not CX tires. I chose these over the Gatorskins.. I think believing these might be even more durable and more 4-season capable. Not sure if I'm right though.
ie these tires: Vittoria Randonneur Pro II Road Bike Tyre | Chain Reaction Cycles
