Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Logical to build up and sell my Marin Larkspur as a CX bike?

it's occurred to me recently that i really don't use my Marin Larkspur and it seems to have good geometry for CX.

It currently has a cromoly fork, but i could get a carbon one maybe even with disc brake mounts, build it up with some decent stuff, maybe 2x9 with a mix of tiagra and 105 and sell it locally for profit (keeping in mind the frame cost me nothing).

i'd aim for maybe 400-500 USD? really not sure how much money i would need to put into it to overhaul almost everything.

my concern is that i've noticed a trend of people spending either 1000+ or like, next to nothing on CX bikes. all or nothing. or maybe that's just what i've seen for sale, and a CX bike in this price range would be much sought after?

Thoughts?

I think it's a ridiculous idea to dump money into a used consumer-level bike before selling it.

Bikes Direct has models in that price range that aren't frankenbikes.

Sell it and get a gravel road/adventure bike.

Bikes Direct has the new Omni Strada line worth looking into.

heres the thing: it currently doesn't have a functional wheelset at all, and i have dumped exactly 0 dollars into it

OK, but unless i'm mistaken none of them have a full tiagra group or any 105. what exactly does "frankenbike" mean anyway?

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. Your original post explicitly discusses putting money into the bike in order to sell it.

I am going to make this crystal-clear: Whatever it is you are trying to sell, sell it as is. Otherwise, you are wasting money.

Right, so you would be dumping money into it to even make it a working bike. I think that's flargle's point...if you aren't building it for yourself, it's not worth it to build up a low-spec bike. Just sell it minus wheels to someone who does want to ride it.

Taking a used bike that retailed for $400 new almost a decade ago and building it up with parts to justify a $500 price now would require you to make it a frankenbike. Which means that a $500 bike from bikesdirect or nashbar or REI would be a much more attractive offer.

Sell it and keep it what it was intended for. There is only so much you can polish a turd. Cut it loose and get an actual cx/gravel bike.

The sensible options atmo:

Build it up and ride the heck out of it.
Part it out on ebay. Probably end up pitching the frame.
Sell it - as-is, where-is.
