Hydraulic brake compatibility

Hi,
I have a flat bar with Tektro Draco Hydraulic brakes.
I want to go to a drop bar and am looking at the Sram 22 Rival Hydraulic shifters.

Are these shifters compatible with the Draco brakes (not sure if all hydraulic are universal)?

Also is there one set of Sram shifters that fit both rim and disc? Or are the pulls different so that there are 2 shifters (1 specific for Rim and 1 for disc)?

appreciate the help - any other tips are welcome

Hydraulic systems are not universal--some take mineral oil, and some take DOT fluid. I'm thinking that Tektro and SRAM hydraulic components will not play nice together, as they use different fluid types.

thanks,
that helps a lot.

Other than the type of oil, are the connectors universal?

I don't think it matters because the type of oil used determines the types of seals that you need so if you mix and match either the seals in your levers or the seals in your calipers will not work with the oil.

If you were to buy a brand new caliper or shifter that doesn't have any fluid could you run mineral (not sure why you'd want DOT fluid)? Say if you bought a brand new Sram set of shifters and like shimano calipers could you fill the Sram shifter with mineral oil being it never had DOT in it at all? I'm old school and still like my rim brakes.

Apart from the levers & calipers aren't compatible, not sure why this question would even be asked with what is currently available on the market. The simple reason for this, is when you currently buy road hydraulic brake shifters, be it from SRAM or Shimano, they comes as a complete package - levers, calipers, hoses, bled etc, currently, you don't buy the parts individually as a retail item.

For what your looking at doing, would look at it as a very cost ineffective way of getting new discs, given you can pick up full bikes (with hydraulic discs) for not too much more than the cost of just the shifters.

Keep your current setup and add a pair of Origin8 drop bar ends:
