Steel cx bikes that aren't built up like tanks
Do these exist? most of the big production brands (surly, all city, etc) are built for strength rather than weight which makes sense for the sport. I'd like to find a steel cx frame that I could use on club road rides as well as race cx

An old LeMond Poprad could probably do that. Someone posted a 19 pound build of one on the hybrid forum recently.

I've built up a steel cross bike to 22 lbs.
It's got a steel fork that weighs 2.4lbs by itself, replace that with a carbon one, and you're close to 20lbs (the fork on my Ritchey weighs under a pound). Add in any possible extra weight weenish things (lighter crankset, lighter wheelset, higher end groupset) it'd be easy to go sub 20lbs IMHO.
At the end of the day, the difference in weight between the frame (not including fork) between my light Ritchey Road Logic steel frame, and my heavy cross steel frame is 1lb.

Swiss Cross Disc can be built up to 20 lbs with Ultegra and hydraulic discs. You can probably go much lighter than that with different components

My All-City is about 17 pounds with an ENVE fork. Closer to 18.5 with the stock steel fork.
Check out the Nature Boy Zona/853 and Macho King.
No one is selling this kind of build as a complete off the shelf. You're going to have to put it together or go custom.

yeah i figured as much. i have an average aluminum cx bike and a caad10 and i would like to possibly find something that could scratch both of those itches. i love the caad but i wish it were more versatile.

Rivendell Legolas. Rivendell Roadeo (clears a ~38 mm tire with mid-reach sidepulls). The tubeset for both is True Temper OX Platinum OS .65-.4-.65.
My Roadeo has a vintage 8-speed Campy Ergo group, 32-spoke wheels, and a Brooks saddle, and it's 21 lbs.

not sure riv still makes the legolas but either way their stuff is a little too rich for my blood. i might need to cap it off at about a grand for the frameset

The Roadeo has the same clearances but no cantilevers. It's still in production, and you can find good deals on used ones if you're patient. I got my Roadeo frameset for $900 and built it up with a gruppo from a too-small too-skinny road bike I had.

That's a tough budget for a top-quality frame. Bikes like the Swiss Cross and Macho King are made with high-end heat-treated tubesets to keep the weight down.

Check out the soma doublecross (tange prestige main triangle) and get a carbon fork; that will get you under a $1,000 for the frame set.

yeah i looked hard at a doublecross because i love soma bikes. i have a juice 29er and i love it but i'm still afraid it might be too hefty to fully replace my go-fast bike. i also don't love the idea of a carbon fork but i may just settle. thanks for the insight.

I'd be a bit surprised if you could get a full steel bike under 20lbs. Not saying it isn't possible, just skeptical.
